One of the original games that spurred the indie revival of a few years ago will be arriving on iPhone this Thursday, the developers announced today. The indie classic, World of Goo has been rumored to be arriving on iPhone for a while now, and it entered Apple's approval process about a week ago. Now we've received word that the game is ready for release, and 2D Boy has all iOS gamers covered.
Most games that release on iPad and iPhone/iPod will release two separate versions, a regular edition and an HD version for iPad. World of Goo is doing something similar that is more confusing, but also more beneficial to the user as well. There will be both a regular and HD edition (the latter is already available), but now the HD edition will receive an update making it a universal app. So if you're planning on playing World of Goo on your iPad as well as your iPhone/iPod Touch, you can just buy the HD version so it spans all devices. If you only want it for the iPhone, then you can now get the cheaper regular edition.
The HD version will still be available for $4.99, and the iPhone/iPod Touch version will cost $2.99. However, during the first 24 hours the game is available, the iPhone/iPod Touch version will be on sale for 99 cents. This whole thing is getting a bit confusing so we'll try to lay it out a bit more simply:
World of Goo: $2.99 - Runs on iPhone and iPod Touch, will be on sale for 24 hours after release for 99 cents. Requires iPhone 3GS/iPhone 4/iPod Touch 3rd Gen or Newer.
World of Goo HD: $4.99 [iTunes Link] - Already released, it will receive an update shortly after the iPhone release that makes it a universal app. If you already own it, the update will allow you to play it on iPhone. Requires iPad, iPhone 3GS/iPhone 4/iPod Touch 3rd Gen or Newer.
World of Goo is an award-winning physics-based puzzle game originally released on PC in 2008. It's the predecessor of such iOS hits as Tiki Towers [iTunes Link]. You use little goo balls to build towers to reach the exit. It's been heralded (for good reason) as one of the most engaging and fun puzzle games in recent memory.
