It certainly does seem that by 2010, we shouldn’t have to tether our iPhones to a USB dock cable to sync with iTunes. If one developer gets his way, soon we won’t have to.
Engadget is reporting that developer Greg Hughes is demonstrating the magic of his new Wi-Fi Sync app on video -- but before you get too excited, it’s not in the App Store yet, and the general consensus seems to be that Apple may never approve it.
So what does Wi-Fi Sync do? As the name implies, you run the app on your iPhone, pair it with iTunes on your computer, and enjoy untethered syncing of your media and other data.
Looks pretty seamless based on the video, which makes us scratch our heads wondering why Apple hasn’t implemented something this simple yet, especially now that they’ve pushed us all to such a mobile way of life by now.
Hughes is planning to submit Wi-Fi sync to Apple by the end of the week. Given Apple’s often-draconian approval process, we’d say this one has low odds of being approved, but our fingers are crossed.
Or as Engadget puts it, “Good luck with that Greg, we hope to be seeing you on Cydia at the very least” -- referring to the alternate jailbreak-only app store where rejected apps hang their shingle.
