We don't even want to think about how many quarters we pumped into the arcade version of Zaxxon back in the early '80s, but 30 years later, SEGA has a sequel you can own for only four of those plays back in the day.
Following our brief mention earlier this week, SEGA has indeed released Zaxxon Escape, a universal app for iOS that attempts to bring a modern flourish to the 1982 arcade classic Zaxxon.
"In 1982, kids everywhere saved their quarters to invade the evil robot ZAXXON’s space fortress in Sega’s first video game with a 3-D isometric perspective," the app description reads. "30 years later, ZAXXON is back and rebuilt for a whole new generation in this fast action arcade game. Get ready to maneuver your spaceship and escape the fortress at warp speeds!"
There's just one problem: This is a whole new game that has very little to do with Zaxxon, and worse yet for fans of the original, doesn't even include that arcade legend.
The good news is that Zaxxon Escape is only 99 cents, supports Retina Display on compatible devices and it's a universal app which works on iPhone 4, fourth-gen iPod touch or iPad 2 and higher, even though it doesn't yet support the larger screen of the iPhone 5, which is promised for a future update.
Let's hope SEGA takes a cue from other game developers and releases an iOS version of the original Zaxxon soon, much like Activision did shortly after releasing their modern take on the Atari classic Pitfall…
