Podcast #17: The iPhone-Free Zone

This week, we tried our damnedest to put together a completely iPhone-free podcast - just to give your senses (and ours) a little break from the iPhone overload.

Here's what we're talking about this week:

> We invite you to call in to the Mac|Live question/comment line: (877) 404-1337, extension 622. Please limit your calls to 1 minute max. We'll review these calls each week and feature our favorites, along with answers and responses, on that week's podcast.

> Mac sales increase by 26% in the second quarter of 2008 - tying for third place with Gateway

> A hacker who developed a worm attacking a vulnerability in OS X receives death threats

> Sony CEO calls Steve Jobs "greedy"

> Cool new products for your Mac (nothing for the iPhone, we swear!)

> What's new on our ever-vibrant forums, MacLife.com, and in the magazine

Listen to it all now in this week's Mac|Live podcast.

If you'd like to subscribe to the Mac|Live podcast series through an RSS feed, click here; if you want to subscribe through the iTunes Store, click here.

It was Todd McFarlane who bought the record-breaking baseball. Todd has nothing to do with Hellboy, who was played by Ron Perlman in a movie (and upcoming sequel) and written/created by Mike Mignola, originally as a comic book. Todd is the creator of Spawn, another devil-related comic book and movie, who doesn't have horns but has a cape that sticks out from his collar like points.

Mandy Patinkin has nothing to do with either of those comics/movies as far as I could tell.

Hey y'all,

Not only is #17 still yielding #16 on iTunes, but #18 is also yielding #16.

Not that #16 was bad or anything, but there are a limited number of times that I'll want to listen to it.

When iTunes downloaded #17 it turned out to be a repeat of #16. Is it just me?!? Has no one else noticed this?!?

I've heard that Mr. Clean sponges work to remove the grease stains left by our palms on the plastic case- try at your own risk [!], I've yet to try it on my iBook.

For all of you iBook/MacBook users:
Turtle wax makes your older dingy outer casing shine like new. Only use this on the outer case, and realize that wax is an abrasive. By that I mean, it could [and probably will] leave small hairline scratches. Therefore, I would only recommend doing this on an older 'Book that already has these markings on them. This wax technique will also work on ANY other GLOSSY plastics, but DO NOT use it on METAL or MATTE surfaces. Again, try at your own risk!

Hey. You were trying to think of what work around Apple had for their Macbook's and Macbook Pro's. It lies simply in the virtue that Apple no longer sells a laptop computer, they sell notebook computers. No where is it suggested that the computer is designed or intended to be placed on your lap. I can't remember where exactly I read that, probably www.apple.com. Anyway, you wanted to know, and now you do.

Cheers,

Syd

i used to be a macaddict reader but i sometimes drp in on maclife to see whats new and now i see a post that talks about "What's new on our ever-vibrant forums". I guess the old spirit of fun and no self promotion is totally totally gone. oh well, so it goes, as vonnegut said. the mac spirit is dead. lets all buy iphones!

Where's Rick? Is he coming back?

avatar

Leslie Ayers

Rik is no longer on staff at Mac|Life as our web producer, but you'll continue to see his byline in the magazine and MacLife.com. He'll continue writing the Deep Tech column indefinitely (we hope!).

After clicking on the podcast link, go to the address and delete the dot in "No.17" so it's just "No17".
