Mercury is still used, even without a CUDA-enabled graphics card. It is the playback engine in Premiere Pro CS5.
To have GPU-accelerated playback (instead of relying on the CPU), you have to have one the nVIDIA CUDA-enabled cards.

As I know, Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 just supports some special avi, because avi is a container which can be encoded with many different codecs.
