CaptureAudio Review

Our iPhones can do so much right out of the box. With the exception of a few games that we can't live without, most of our favorite apps are merely better versions of the stock apps that come installed with iOS: Fantastical, Tempo, Clear, Camera+, etc. CaptureAudio is no exception, serving as an upgrade for one of the least-popular iOS apps, Voice Memos. It wouldn't be too hard to improve upon Apple's barebones sound recorder, but CaptureAudio's fantastic interface and versatile indexing features make the built-in option look downright useless.
While we were secretly hoping CaptureAudio would let us grab clips from YouTube or Pandora, we quickly learned that its power isn't so much in the way it records, but rather in how it lets you organize the recordings you make. Binders and notebooks keep your audio memos in order, but the killer feature here is flagging, which lets you easily place markers on your tracks to find important segments in an instant.

As you record, a unique circular interface presents eight flags that can be applied during recording or playback by tapping the center button. The various icons are kind of like bookmarks to jog your memory; for example, if you're interviewing someone and want to remember where to find a particular quote, you can flag that section of the recording with the "Important" label. Flags all function the same, but there's a wide library of icons to choose from. Everything is customizable, but once you settle on a set you're comfortable with, you probably won't be changing them much.
The interface is great once you get used to it, but without a proper tutorial, it took us a few moments to familiarize ourselves with it. A lack of in-app sharing was rather frustrating – CaptureAudio wants you to use iTunes' clunky file-sharing system – and we also experienced a couple crashes and some background resource-hogging that required a kill and restart.
The bottom line. If you use your iPhone to record voice notes or interviews, CaptureAudio will help keep them in order.
