You don't have to be a great artist to have a good time fiddling around with DrawQuest. This goofy little social art app for iPad encourages you to draw something new everyday by giving you a prompt to follow, and then pitting you against other artists to see who can come up with the most clever sketches. It's a cool way to jump-start your creative spirit, but the real fun comes from sharing your creations with the game's thriving community and voting on your favorite doodles.
Each day a new quest appears in the form of a half-completed picture accompanied by a written prompt, like "What's under the bed?" or "What came out of the magic lamp?" Your job is to fill in the blanks by drawing whatever you wish in the space provided, from the outrageously silly to the painfully obvious choice. Once you're done, your drawing is uploaded to the gallery for other users to vote on. The competition is lighthearted, and the community is extremely inventive, offering some hilarious and often thoughtful drawings to the pile. It's almost more fun to browse what other folks have uploaded than to make your own doodles.
Completing a drawing quest earns you coins that can be spent to unlock different color palettes to draw with, and additional coins are earned for every vote you get from other players. There's no real winning or losing here; really, the addictive pull comes from seeing what's next. You can also go back and tackle old quests you missed. While DrawQuest's limited drawing toolset pales in comparison to most other programs out there, the simple scope levels the playing field, and you can create surprisingly competent sketches with what you're given to work with.
The bottom line. DrawQuest's social doodling challenges are silly and sublime, offering quite a bit of creative fun in a sparse package.
