With its reputation as a killer casual web-browsing device, the iPad is the perfect platform for spending hours skimming eBay listings. As on the iPhone, the online auction juggernaut has an iPad app ready at launch, but while it excels at the core acts of browsing and purchasing goods from millions of worldwide sellers, the app lacks too many core features to replace the web version.

Flipping through auction listings is a breeze on the eBay app.
In place of the long auction listings from the website are large bubbles containing the listing title, an image (if available), and all the bidding and pricing details, and it's an attractive way to flip through the thousands of results that pop up for many searches. You can buy items easily through the eBay app or put them on your watch list for later consideration, and the My eBay link offers a quick roundup of all your buying and selling activity on the service.

eBay for iPad lets you buy and watch items. Selling? Err, try the website.
However, several essential features have yet to be implemented, namely the ability to message users, leave or view feedback, see sellers' other auctions, and create your own listings to sell items. Until those features are added, the app remains just a shell of the total eBay experience -- but it's a pretty solid-looking shell, at that.
