Edge Extended Review

Most people probably aren't aware of Mobigames incredible iOS game, Edge, from the early days of the App Store. That's because the game was tied up in a major legal battle that kept it off the store for huge swaths of time (synopsis: the gaming industry's most infamous patent troll, Tim Langdell, sues the crap out of anything with the word "Edge" in it, claiming he owns the copyright because his company is named Edge Games.)

However, now that Langdell got put in his place after trying to sue Electronic Arts over the game Mirror's Edge, Mobigame is free to release its much lauded puzzle platformer games. In short, this is very good news for iOS gamers. Edge Extended is the best puzzle-platformer that we've played in a long time. Since, well, the original Edge.
Edge Extended begins as a deceptively simple puzzle game. You move your little block through the game world by sliding your finger across the screen to topple it over. Swiping, then holding your finger against the screen makes the block "run." And for a few levels, that's about it. You navigate simple puzzles, and the levels never take longer than two minutes and a couple attempts. However, about 15 levels in, Edge Extended proves those levels were merely a tutorial for what was to come.

The levels get much more complex, and the game introduces new sections that are based more on skill and agility. For instance, balancing the cube on its edge makes it immune to the effects of gravity. So you'll need to utilize that skill to stay alive if, say, the floor drops out from under you. Clinging to the wall for a split second may be your only chance at survival.
However, Edge Extended isn't even close to being done yet. Even later in the game, perspective becomes a gameplay mechanic all its own. The game's world of blocks and squares becomes a world of illusions in the skilled hands of Mobigame's level designers. The levels, which once were nothing more than background, become a deathtrap maze.

The bottom line. Edge Extended is an absolutely superb game that will make you think and constantly challenge you to improve. It's also a perfect fit for the iOS platform, with flawless controls -- it's on par with iOS instant classics like Cut the Rope.
