Paper Wars: Canon Fodder Review
Last year, developer iFun4all released a game that they triumphantly took the liberty of dubbing “The Worst Game Ever Made.” It was called Crap of Defense and featured an extremely low-budget look and design. Enemies (which looked like little doodles of soldiers on a scrap of paper) marched across the screen while the player launched missile from a single cannon to stop them.

There's hardly any variety in this game at all.
In January they pulled it from the App Store for reasons unannounced. Now the game has returned under a new moniker, Paper Wars: Cannon Fodder. Despite the name change and a small uptick in the game's presentation, this is still essentially Crap of Defense in a slightly prettier wrapper.
The gameplay is still extremely simple. Soldiers march across the screen and you blow them up. There's some slight variation in mission objectives but not much. Sometimes the game will task you with targeting only a specific variety of enemy, but that's about as varied as it gets.

Enemies march in; enemies blow up. Rinse; repeat.
Low-budget though it may be, Paper Wars is kind of cool-looking in a way. It may not be technically amazing, but its paper-scrap-doodles are at least a unique style. It's also occasionally fun for a few moments.

The art style is actually kind of neat despite its low-budget appearance.
The problem with Paper Wars isn't that it's a bad game, or that it's not worth your 99 cents. The problem is that it's simply not up to par with other games going for 99 cents on the App Store. So while it may be worth your money, it's just not worth your time. Even if you really, really love tower defense, you can still play StickWars 2, Sentinel 2: Earth Defense, Cartoon Defense 2, and a host of others instead.

It's not that Paper Wars is bad, it's just that the competition is extremely good.
The bottom line. It's got a unique style and a simple premise, but it's still a repackaged version of Crap of Defense. If you've played that before, then there's nothing new to see here.
iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 4.2 or later. (Separate HD version for iPad is $1.99.)
Great variety from a simple concept. Easy to understand.
Overly simple gameplay. One-trick pony.
