My mom used to tell me I would forget my head if it wasn’t attached. My husband has the patience of a saint, circling back to our house when I realize a block away that I forgot my iPhone. Kensington’s Proximo system isn’t the first of its kind, but its combination of durable, affordable hardware and a well-designed iPhone app is finally helping me stop losing and forgetting things.
The key fob has a button I can push to activate the Find My iPhone siren, an old-timey “a-ROO-ga!” horn. (Sounds can be customized in the Proximo app, and they play even if your phone’s silent switch is on.) If the keys themselves are hidden, the iPhone app helps me locate them with sound if they’re within Bluetooth range, about 30 feet. If they’re out of range, the app pinpoints on a map where they were last seen, and how long ago. The starter system also includes a tag you can attach to anything else, like your laptop bag. If you’re really worried about leaving something behind, you can even set an alarm to sound when the tag and/or fob stray too far from your phone. Unlike the BiKN system we reviewed last year (3.5 stars, Oct/12, p62), Proximo’s tag and fob don’t require USB charging, and the system doesn’t require a special iPhone case. The Proximo starter kit is also $70 cheaper than BiKN, and you can add additional tags for $24.99 each—the app can handle up to 5 tags and fobs. The coin batteries in Promixo’s tag and fob should last about 6 months, and they’re easy to change yourself.
The bottom line. The app is a snap to use, and the fob and tag are sturdy and have loud alarm sounds. With no charging and no noticeable hit to my iPhone’s battery, the Proximo system is a no-brainer way to help my feeble brain.
iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, third- or fourth-gen iPad, iPad mini running iOS 5 or later. iPhone 5 requires iOS 6.
It uses Bluetooth 4, so it doesn’t drain your iPhone battery. Batteries inside the fob and tag are long-lasting and user-replaceable (no charging).
It uses Bluetooth 4, so older iOS devices aren’t compatible.
