Scribblenauts Remix is one of the most endlessly entertaining apps we've ever encountered on the App Store. Even after finishing the game, we still constantly pull it out to see what it can do.
It works like this: think of a noun, then type it in and that object will appear in the game world. Just about anything you can think up can become an object in the game. There's also an adjective system for modifying your creations, though it's not quite as robust.
You'll encounter all of this before you even start the first level. The title screen of the game is essentially a little playground for you to experiment on, while the rest of the game is a series of puzzles for you to solve with your creations. Unfortunately, most are simple environmental puzzles which task you with pushing levers or manifesting just the right object to make someone happy.
The real problem is that there's a fundamental disconnect between the game's premise and its philosophy. The core mechanic is about testing your creativity, which works very well – but it contrasts poorly with the actual game: rigid puzzles which tend to force you down a specific path. Apart from a few great levels that encourage creativity, the title screen ends up being more fun than the puzzles that make up the meat of the experience.
The bottom line. Scribblenauts Remix is great and the tech is loads of fun to experiment with. It’s just far too short. At $4.99, it's a pretty pricey game for the App Store, especially when better puzzle options (like Cut the Rope) sell for a buck. We still love it to bits, but more as an interactive toy than a lukewarm puzzle game.
