Showtimes

Showtimes screen
While sparse on posters and trailers, the interface is still powerful.

Showtimes provides simple movie theatre box-office information to see what’s playing nearby. This free version of OneTap Movies lets you scroll through a list based on ticket sales, rating, recent additions, or you can browse local theaters. While the theatre list included most of our local favorites—even small locations—this scaled-back software is missing features from free competitors.

You can’t buy tickets, look at movie posters, or even view trailers. Showtimes links to an IMDB page with more details about a selection, but the nebulous star ratings don’t lead to critic reviews. And just like OneTap movies, you can’t browse listings by movie name, a critical mistake.

THE BOTTOM LINE
While the drop-down interface is often effective, don’t bother with this scaled-back software that misses competitors’ features.

Showtimes 1.2
COMPANY: Avantar
CONTACT: www.avantar.us
PRICE: Free
REQUIREMENTS: iPhone or iPod touch with 2.0 software update.
Nested interface works well. Includes details for small theaters.
Can’t view movies alphabetically. Top of lists include ads for OneTap Movies. Can’t buy tickets. Review scores are managed by Avantar instead of critic sites. Doesn’t show theatre phone numbers. Has no trailers or posters.

avatarMaybe I'm crazy, but...

I'm looking at my iPod touch right now, and the features listed as "cons" are available...I tapped the listing for Babylon A.D. at a local theater, and I'm taken to a page that shows the movie poster (albeit a small version), a synopsis and a "play" button to watch the trailer. So...did I miss something?

avatarAnd....

I just got the new upgrade and now I can buy movie tickets thru Showtimes. I think this review was a little negative.
