iPhone
SportsTap

If you’re like us, your iPhone bookmarks folder is filled with sites that provide an array of live sports score updates --- MLB.com, NBA.com, NFL.com, Scores Pro, ESPN, et al. Being a sports fan is a full-time business, and iPhone has made it easy to keep on top of our game, whether on the road, at work or at the beach.

And now, thanks to a little-known Web app-turned standalone native app, it’s easier than ever.

A free download, SportsTap shrinks the wide world of sports into a single screen of logos with app-like badges for games in progress. Clicking on the MLB logo, for instance, brings up the day’s slate of games, with complete box score information, scoring summaries and a full batter-by-batter breakdown; similarly, the ATP link provides a list of active and completed tournaments, along with full match results for the day, week and year. Unfortunately, there are no live updates here, but a list of tennis scores this comprehensive is hard to find elsewhere.

Scores are arranged by day, and SportsTap offers a full season’s worth of stats. However, the only way to get from July 15 to April 12 is to tediously tap through 94 days of scores; it’s nice to have access to last month’s games, but a calendar view would go a long way here.

SportsTap is one of the App Store’s ad-supported offerings. While mostly unobtrusive, the Ads by Google bar gets a little tiresome, especially since it blends into the white refresh bar and seems to randomly appear. Also, the developers neglected the usual top-of-the-screen Back button in favor of a tiny SportsTap logo at the top right of the screen that links Home and a bottom-anchored Home link.

There are other limitations, too. Clicking on an out-of-season sports league, like the NBA in July, for example, reveals “NBA information will be available at the beginning of the 208-2009 season,” despite a bevy of draft, summer league and free agent news available elsewhere. So, perhaps a more accurate name for this app would be ScoresTap.

But, if you want to know how your favorite (or least favorite) team did on the court, field or diamond, there’s simply no substitute.

THE BOTTOM LINE

For serious sports fanatics who need a quick score fix, SportsTap is a quick and easy way to to get the day's information.
