Upgrade Soul Review

It's a classic science fiction construct: revolutionary new technology promises the world, brave (and/or foolish) pioneers dabble in the unknown, and the unexpected results bring dire consequences. Upgrade Soul – a standalone graphic novel app with 3D elements and a soundtrack – hits a couple of familiar notes in that regard, but its tale of a so-called medical miracle and the people it affects captivates in its early chapters.
Written and illustrated by Ezra Claytan Daniels, Upgrade Soul spotlights Hank and Molly Nonnar, an elderly pair of well-off science aficionados who decide to undergo a bold and highly experimental medical treatment – one that promises to rebuild their bodies, double their life spans, enhance strength and brain capacity, and eliminate existing ailments. In the initial chapter (included with the app purchase), we meet the kindly couple in their home and then suddenly flash forward to after the procedure, when the initial impact of the results is quite clear from a glance.

Additional chapters in the 18-part saga are released about once a month within for $1.99 apiece (or $6.99 for a five-chapter purchase/pre-order), and in the next two volumes released thus far, Upgrade Soul starts to reveal its deeper narrative. Who are the Nonnars, and perhaps more importantly, who are the people behind this risky treatment? And what secrets are they withholding from their willing test subjects? Upgrade Soul begins strongly and has thus far continued to entertain, thanks to rich dialogue and tantalizing cliffhangers.
While the story is paramount, part of Upgrade Soul's appeal comes from its iOS-centric presentation. This isn't a traditional print graphic novel adapted for digital, but rather a touch-based experience from the ground up. Lightly animated scenes show falling rain, computer static, or blinking eyes amidst the still images, and tilting the iPad or iPhone in any direction moves the individual elements in the frame, giving it the sensation of existing in 3D space. Meanwhile, an excellent original soundtrack – which at times adds notes to the music based on your panel-to-panel swipes – completes the digital aesthetic. Both the visual and audio effects feel like subtle and smart elements of the overall composition, rather than awkward or overbearing additions to an existing work.
The bottom line. Gripping science fiction and beautiful presentation designed for iOS devices make Upgrade Soul an enchanting read.
