VidRhythm Review

With music videos migrating from cable TV to the greener pastures of YouTube -- where stardom is made for folks like Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black -- there's a temptation for folks to craft their own musical creations. Rock Band creator Harmonix's new iOS title VidRhythm streamlines this process, though its options are so limited that it's more a meme creator than an editorial tool.
You start by picking one of 21 songs, most of which are made specifically for the app, though a few public domain classics (like Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 First Movement) are on hand as well. Then you select one of 10 background themes to accompany your tune. These range from such popular Internet icons as cats and colorful kaleidoscope layouts. Regrettably, there's no way to mix and match backgrounds in unlikely ways.

From there it's up to you to record a handful of brief soundbites and video clips to be merged with your selected template. Irritatingly, you can't record these separately, nor are there any preset sounds if you don't have an instrument on hand and don't want to hum a drum noise. While this ensures users place their own personal stamp on the video, some would rather have the music flow better and only influence the visual half of the equation. Of course, you can forgo the directions completely and just record obscenities, which generally produces more entertaining results.
The end product likely won't be any good, but it might be funny. I was particularly proud of my video about dogs interspersed with clips of Tommy Wiseau saying "Hi, doggy" from The Room. And luckily, sharing your videos is a cinch, as you can upload them onto YouTube and Facebook with one click, preserving your masterpieces on the Internet forever.

The bottom line. With more songs, backgrounds, and pre-recorded sounds for those with little musical talent, VidRhythm could be a riot. As is, it's more like the Clip Art of music videos: good for a few laughs, but too narrow in scope and options to have much lasting value beyond initial novelty.
