Depending on your feelings about the company's distinct brand of entertainment, Wake Up With Disney either takes a bit of the pain out of dragging yourself out of slumberland or ensures you’ll never want to sleep again. You’ll have to love Donald Duck and his propensity for tantrums to stand it for more than a few minutes, as he’s the one and only choice of companion in this playful interactive alarm clock. He’ll huff and he’ll puff, and he’ll either drive you insane or delight you with his wake-up-time antics.
The alarm takes something of a back seat to Donald, as it hides in the top left corner and requires a maze of menus to set to your liking. Wake Up With Disney can be setup to yell at you via push notifications, but the best experience comes from keeping your device unlocked with Donald sleeping along with you, snoring quietly in the background.
The slapstick humor and noisy star attraction may delight young children, but be warned that it may also terrify any nearby pets. My cat got the fright of her life when Donald Duck started his screaming for the first time. He’s an emotive fellow, reacting with vigor to the current time and live-updated weather as well as your pokes and prods. You can also knock him heels over head, strike a golf ball, or engage in some idle celebration, but these canned animations get old fast.
More useful extras are few and far between. A flashlight option turns the screen white to help you see in the dark, while a snooze button is just small enough to be a pain to hit in a daze. Donald can change between three costumes and the camera moves as you tilt, but it mostly feels like an app comprised of half-implemented ideas.
The bottom line. Wake Up With Disney is sure to delight Donald Duck fans with its interactive alarm clock antics, but between a dearth of unique features and no alternate characters, it can't help but feel a little phoned in.
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 5.0 or later
More fun than the built-in iOS alarm. Weather forecast is reflected in the graphics. Donald Duck is at his temperamental best.
Only one character available. Likely to irritate all but the most patient and hardcore Donald Duck fans. Few extra features over built-in apps. Lazy interface and menu design.
