For most of us, either time or money is scarce; for many, it's certainly both. Yoga classes often come at $20 a pop and require an hour and a half of commitment. If you're a new or busy yogi, give Yoga Studio a try. This inexpensive app has quickly become one of my favorites for fitness.
While Yoga Studio can't quite replicate a real studio setting, it does offer a few things most teachers can't. You can choose your own practice level, and then practice for between 15 and 60 minutes in pre-recorded studio classes, as well as create your own practice. The app also allows you to create your own yoga schedule so you can stay on top of your routine, and features an extensive searchable pose library.
Yoga Studio's included classes are rather enjoyable. The workouts are well put together, easy to follow, and it’s nice to be able to practice for as little as 15 minutes, which helps it fit into a hectic day. We also like that you can see which set of poses each class follows before you commit to starting. If you’re a truly advanced yogi, you might want something beyond the advanced classes -- but that’s the beauty of Yoga Studio’s create-your-own-class feature: you can tailor classes to your own level.
Every prerecorded class requires a download in this app, which means Yoga Studio will take up precious gigabytes if you download every class. However, it also means that you can watch the videos and practice without any lag once downloaded, thanks to the lack of streaming. Individual classes range from 40-120 MB, which is pretty reasonable for up to a 60-minute video, and it’s unlikely that beginners will immediately download all the advanced videos (and vice versa). My one lingering wish was that Yoga Studio allowed users to choose their own music, as comparable apps do, but the omission did not seriously affect my enjoyment of the app.
The bottom line. For its slim asking price, Yoga Studio is a steal thanks to stellar classes, customizable routines, and flexible time options.
(Editor's Note: A previous version of this review incorrectedly noted that users could not search for poses by name. The text has been updated to address this issue.)
