Rogers Announces iPhone 3G Rate Plan

What happens when you don’t live in the home of the brave, land of the free (and unlimited internet data)?

Rogers, Canada’s iPhone service provider, has revealed a four-tier package plan for iPhone 3G users in the Great White North. Service plans for Canadian iPhone aficionados start at $60 and will include 150 anytime minutes, 400 MB of internet data, and 75 outgoing text messages. Rogers notes that 400 MB of data equals up to 200,000 text emails or 3,100 web pages, or 1,360 photo attachments.

Need more, eh? Subsequent plans are $75 for 300 minutes, 750 MB of internet data, and 100 outgoing text messages. The $100 plan boosts doubles those minutes to 600, allows for 1GB of internet data, 200 text messages. For the real fanatic, Rogers offers a plan at $115 with 800 anytime minutes, 2 gigs of internet downloads, and texting until your thumbs wear out with 300 outgoing messages per month.

For the Canadian who wants it all, there are a couple of additional voice value packs that include popular wireless features. The $15 pack includes Caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 2,500 Sent Text Messages and 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes. The $20 pack includes Caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 10,000 Sent Messages, 6:00 p.m. Early Evening Calling and 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes.

All plans require a three-year contract and include free Wi-Fi access at all Rogers and Fido Hotspots, unlimited evening and weekend minutes, incoming text messages and visual voicemail.

Fido, a subsidiary of Rogers, is offering the same four-tier service plan.

I'd wait. I have reason to believe they will be picked up by other carriers up here. I think we have some laws which will limit how long Apple is exclusive with Rogers. This was actually Rogers chance to show that they had their customers interests in mind. Once again it becomes a cash-grab. Kinda sad.

How in the World can another provider pick up the iPhone? Rogers/Fido is the only GSM network in Canada, and it would take years for Bell and Telus to switch. The only completely implausible situation remaining is that Petro Canada, the MNVO of Rogers/Fido will find a way to sneak it past the owners of their own network.

I could run through 300 text messages a week, let alone a month. I guess that this must mean that text messaging isn't as prevalent in Canada as the US, hmmm? OR, could it be that another telecommunications company that has decided to take advantage of Apple's loyal fan base by bending them over and putting on the rubber glove? You decide.

The sad thing is that Rogers is the only GSM network availible in Canada which makes them the only able to supply the Iphone to Canadians. I would absolutly love to get an Iphone for myslef but sadly this partnership with the evil Robbers corportion will keep me from buying the phone, unless I find one that is unlocked. My quest for a new phone continues.

I agree... those rates are a deal breaker for me. There's NO WAY I'd pay that much. I'll stick with Telus, thanks. At least they oil the rubber glove.

Verizon.
Apple approached them first with the iPhone,m and if they had accepted then the iPhone would've came to Verizon's network, which is CDMA, therefore making the first iPhone CDMA, which both TELUS and Bell use.
I don't know about you but the BlackBerry Thunder and the CDMA version of the Bold are looking pretty attractive now.

iPhone 3G Voice & Data Plans

Compared to what they offered before for the other smartphones they sell it's far better and I know most people won't go over 200 MB unless they hack the iPhone for tethering. I've been using an unlocked iPhone (EDGE) since they first came out and haven't gone over 200 MB with heavy email and data (downloads, weather maps, google maps, YouTube, internet browsing). I would of liked to see Rogers add a Canada Wide UNC (Universal Network Calling) for unlimited network calling between Fido and Rogers customers across Canada. As well as including the 6 PM start calling and 10,000 National sms for all the iPhone plans instead of making it a separate purchase. I do like how they include free WIFI on all Rogers and Fido Hotspots across Canada which is similar to O2 and their offering free WIFI Cloud access in the UK. Though unfortunately here in the West we don't have as many Rogers/Fido WIFI Hotspots as they're either run by Telus or Bell. My hope is that with the 700 MHz spectrum auction that a major player such as Shaw will get into the wireless GSM market to offer some real competition like there is in the USA where there's approximately 12 GSM carriers.

I just confirmed the free WIFI Hotspots for Rogers and Fido customers using the iPhone Voice & Data plans is Canada wide at any Hotspot that allows you to log into your Rogers Hotspot account (ie: Starbucks, Chapters, McDonalds, International Airports, etc). This will help a lot of customers lower their HSPA/EDGE data usage in major cities or for those that commute across country frequently going from Airport to Airport.

Ok someone explain something to me.....

How can you have visual Voicemail if you dont have call display?

Im assuming you need to have one of the value packs added to get call display right?

or is it included?

Also I went into a Rogers Store the other day to find out about using my OG iPhone on the Rogers network after the upgrade to 2.0 and litterally the guy almost attacked me....lol

"We have been advised that if we try and activate a OG iPhone we will be terminated on the spot!"

Fido evening start at 5PM w/ the $20 value pack and Rogers starts at 6PM. Also Fido bills by the second when you o over your minutes and Rogers bills by the minute.

That Much???

Soooooo it's going to cost me $83 for the cheapest iPhone plan, plus text and caller ID. Even if I wanted to add just caller ID and 2500 texts thats $17 so its cheeper to go with the Value pack of $15. Add the System access fee and other fees and it comes out to $83. Its not a deal breaker for me as I pay $63 for a 4 year old phone. But that sure frustrates me that they are going to take advantage of us.

sync iPhone with MobileMe

I just had a concern that the 400 MB may not be enough for those using the iPhone with Apple's MobileMe. With it constantly keeping things in sync a user in a 30 day billing period could possibly go over even the $115.00 iPhone 3G Voice & Data plan which includes 2 GB of data. Rogers should really reconsider changing the data to unlimited especially considering their major competitor Telus has already released unlimited data plans for smartphones starting at $30.00.
