Trojan Horses on Mac OS X

We briefly mentioned this on Monday, but there's more info about the Mac OS X Trojan horses recently sighted.

One of them, seen in the wild, is disguised as a Mac program called PokerGame.app. If you type in your administrator password at the prompt, the hacker will be able to remotely access your Mac through a SSH tunnel. But another Trojan, so far just a proof of concept, actually gives the hacker root access, via an ARDAgent vulnerability in the operating system.

This has naturally led to more concern about the rising threat of Mac OS X malware, and we're sure to hear more about it as the Mac platform becomes more and more popular. Prominent hacker Dino Dai Zovi offers some suggestions for Apple to put better malware protection into Snow Leopard. Until then (and even after then, of course), it's up to everyone to stay vigilant.

Instead of taking the irresponsible approach of Microsoft, Apple should be taking reponsibility for the security of it's OS. If it can be infected with Trojans and viruses, then Leopard should be fixed to prevent it. If that means there should be an antivirus utility, then Apple should provide it, just as they provide networking and other aspects of they product.

Wow. You guys are pricks. Who cares if he spells it wrong? Are you guys always perfect in spelling and grammar? Sheesh. Here's Robbie doing us a service and you guys totally miss the point and talk about how trojan is spelled. It's like a parent who looks at the one A- on a report card with 6 As. And we wonder why sometimes Mac users have a terrible reputation for being pricks.

Robbie, thanks for all the helpful updates.

What is with you people. So what if they spelled Trojan wrong. They are just trying to warn us of a possible threat to our computers. Maclife is the best Mac mag out there. I read everything in it as soon as I get it.

There are no good mecintosh megezines now that MacAddict is gone. Mac|Life is bland and uninspired.

Trojen? I know e is fairly close to a but where's the journalistic ability to spell? I swear you guys leave in these mistakes on purpose to see if we notice them. If you're doing a sweeps, I'll take 2 hours in for the next article for $5.

I don't see anywhere in the article where it says Trojen. Every time it is spelled Trojan so what's the point of your post?

but I do see 'vigilent'.

I really need to be more vigilent with the spell check. Sometimes I think it hates me and wants me to look like a chump.

I fixed the error. The post had a very valid point. I forgot to give the orignal poster the proper thanks for pointing it out. Thanks!
