Robert Keith of Flagstaff, Arizona, decided to forgo the usual hair-metal-inspired air guitar video, and opted instead to bring the banjo into the fray. So Robert recorded himself air-guitaring “Dueling Banjos” with his trusty Canon GL2 video camera.
Using a technique made famous by the classic Disney film The Parent Trap, Robert first filmed himself wearing a black shirt and pantomiming the guitar part, then wearing a gray shirt for the banjo part, and then he spliced the two together with Final Cut Express. “The editing was funny, because I knew I needed to use Final Cut Express, I just didn’t know how. I found a tutorial online which talked about the eight-point garbage matte tool, and that seemed like it would do what I needed.”
Robert’s efforts paid off—although the vote was close. In fact, the staff’s initial vote resulted in a tie. So we looked to honorary staff member and guitar ninja Dweezil Zappa (www.zappaplayszappa.com). Dweezil’s vote for Robert won him a brand-new Line 6’s Variax 600 guitar and Variax Workbench 1.5 software. Robert intends to use his prize to learn to play the guitar—for real.
