In the midst of all this Mountain Lion madness, we thought it'd be cool if we indulged our materialistic tendencies and showed off some gadgets we've set our sights on lately. Some of the items listed have already been reviewed and some are slated for the future, but for now just consider it eye candy! And hey, you can chime in with your own in the comments!

DisplayMate Deems Nexus Tablet Display Not So High Resolution

Early reviews of Google's first Android tablet have been so positive, many are calling it the first real iPad competitor--so much so that Apple might be gearing up its own Nexus 7 killer for the fall. Size, weight, price and, yes, even the OS have industry experts singing its praises, including Apple stalwart Walt Mossberg, who went so far as to call it "a better choice than the iPad for people on a budget." But it looks like Google's race to the bottom with Amazon (the display costs just $10 more than the far smaller iPhone), has had some unfortunate side effects.

Carbon 49 USB MIDI Controller Review

A quality keyboard is an important tool for the recording musician--whether you play piano or not. Oh sure, you can try to make do by plinking out melodies on GarageBand’s onscreen keyboard, but you’ll quickly hit a point where you’ll want the hands-on range and expression that only a real keyboard can provide. Samson would be happy to scratch that itch with the Carbon 49...but the product doesn’t seem entirely sure whose itches it wants to scratch.

    iRig Mix Review

In the pre–App Store days, performing as a DJ for pals and parties meant hauling around turntables and mixing equipment—or at least a trunk full of expensive digital counterparts. Nowadays, anyone with an iPad or iPhone and an app like Djay can scratch and mash up tracks with ease using their own digital music library, though there’s a world of difference between swiping a touchscreen and having physical knobs and switches to twiddle while dishing out beats.

    WTHR Review

There's a fine line between form and function. Every developer who puts a premium on design inevitably faces tough choices along the way, sacrificing features and usability for the sake of retaining their vision. Like its name suggests, WTHR is a minimalist reinterpretation of Apple's Weather app, offering the current temperature and conditions alongside a 7-day forecast. As a Dieter Rams-inspired design project, it hits on many of his 10 principles, with a pure, clean aesthetic that practically begs you to touch it.

Say you’re at home or the office, and you need to make a few phone calls. You reach for your iPhone, but you need to conserve battery life since you’re about to run some errands right after you hang up. You could charge the iPhone while talking, but that tethers you to an outlet or a USB port. Miss your landline yet? Maybe just a little?

8 Apps to Get in the Mood for The Dark Knight Rises

Bruce Wayne runs a billion-dollar company, builds cool gadgets in secret, and has a killer flair for the theatrical, so it’s no surprise Apple fans like us are stoked for The Dark Knight Rises. We’re just not excited about waiting even a handful of hours more for the movie to release! At least our iOS devices can help us live the Gotham City lifestyle until we get to kick back and watch Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Hardy do it for us. With this utility belt of apps, you too can tap into your inner hero––or villain––and rule the streets, wherever you happen to be.

    Gabi Review

Gabi reimagines Facebook with a gorgeous design and custom filters, but it ultimately lacks nuance in highlighting the content people want to see. It replaces the usual Facebook feed with a selection of over 100 questions -- such as "Which of my friends' statuses are most liked?" -- that are answered in ranked lists from which you can do the usual Facebook interactions, with an option to limit results to today, this week, or anytime. This unofficial option is a joy to navigate and explore, but is it a suitable replacement for the proper Facebook app?

    Cobook Review

Apple’s simple Address Book app (redubbed Contacts in Mountain Lion) can store your contact details, upload them to iCloud, which syncs them to other devices--and that’s about it. But we hate having to launch it to see, edit, or create a contact. Cobook takes that pain away. Plus, you don’t have to re-enter or import existing contacts: Cobook makes full use of Address Book’s database, so anything you modify with Cobook is still available to your other devices using iCloud.

The Lifer: How Secure Is the Cloud?

Back in the late 1960s, a popular public service announcement intoned: “It’s 10pm. Do you know where your children are?” Let’s rephrase that for today: “It’s 2012. Do you know where your data is?” My guess is that you don’t.

Thirty years ago, we geeks knew exactly where our data was: on floppies in Tyvek sleeves. Then we got multiuser systems at work, and shared hard drives with our coworkers. Next, networks put our files on central servers, a step further away from our direct control. In the 1990s came the Internet, which gave us access to a world of content, but which also gave the world a doorway--preferably a locked one--into our Macs.
