Tips for Getting More Out of Your Apple TV

Long referred to as a hobby during Apple keynotes, Apple TV has evolved into one of the star peripherals of the iOS ecosystem. And no wonder--this slim 4-inch box turns your humble HDTV into a networked entertainment powerhouse. Apple TV’s HDMI and optical audio ports connect to your home theater, and it connects to your network via 802.11n Wi-Fi or 100Base-T Ethernet. Once you’re plugged in, you can buy or rent movies at up to 1080p, or buy TV shows at the same resolution, from iTunes.

    15-inch 2.2GHz Core i7 MacBook Pro Review

Apple launched its latest iteration of the MacBook Pro rather quietly, with no media event or even a press release. Instead, they quietly bumped up the specs in their flagship laptops. If you’ve recently bought a MacBook Pro, you’re not missing much. But if you’ve been mulling over a purchase, now might be the time. The improvements are modest, to be sure, but Apple has also brought back an option that we’ve been chomping at the bit to have for quite some time.

New iPod Touch & iPod Nano Reviews

The iPhone 4S actually does have some killer new features. The 2011 iPod refresh, on the other hand, is just that-- a refresh. But sometimes good enough is plenty good enough. Though the newest iPods lack any whiz-bang new features, they’re still the best music players out there. You could buy a no-name MP3 player, or a Zune (oh right, not anymore!)-- but why would you?

    iPhone 4S Review

The iPhone 4S is the best disappointment Apple has ever released. The build-up to the company’s next iPhone was so over the top, so astronomically hyped, that for some, anything short of the iPhone 6 would have been a letdown. When the 4S was announced, “in-the-know” tech heads chastised it for retaining the same body they hailed as the best of all time a little over a year ago. But no matter how vocal the vocal minority might have been, the iPhone 4S has flown off shelves at a rate that just might make it the fastest-selling gadget of all time.

    2.3GHz Core i5 Mac Mini & 1.6GHz Core i5 MacBook Air Review

Add the MacBook to the long list of things Apple has killed off. Toss it on the pile, alongside floppy drives, ADB ports, and (soon, we’re betting) optical drives. While the death of the MacBook was shocking at first, what’s even more shocking is to realize that the SSD-equipped MacBook Air is Apple’s new budget laptop. It’s the sexiest, smallest, and yep, the cheapest too. But the Air isn’t the only thing Apple has overhauled. Their starter desktop has also gotten a makeover. The 2011 Mac mini now sports a Core i5 processor, but like the laptop line, Apple has trimmed some of the fat -- in this case, the optical drive.

A Brief History of the Mac mini

mac mini handsThe Mac mini: So tiny! So adorable! So cute! Despite its detractors, it has its devotees, among whom must be counted Steve Jobs himself. If he didn't still believe in it, it wouldn't have gotten the refresh it did recently. Somehow, it keeps hanging in there among its larger brethren. For those of you who may have forgotten its humble origins, we've provided a quick look back at the history of the Mac mini.

If you are relatively new to the Mac scene, maybe having jumped on board when the iPhone hit big, you might think of Apple as a hit factory. It seems like everything that comes out of Cupertino strike big, doesn't it? However, those of us who have been around for a while remember that not every gadget Apple launched lived long enough to deserve being pushed forward into the future.

We've put together a list of Apple products that we thought were cool, and wish that they could have stuck around for longer than they did. If this is the first time you've seen some of these, marvel at the wonders and boggle at the misfits! Who knows? Maybe one of these things might return in a new form someday!

    2.7GHz Core i5 iMac Review

Brand-new iMacs always provoke the same response -- awe mixed with more than a little bit of gadget lust -- and the latest installment of Apple’s flagship desktop is no exception. On the outside, the 2011 iMacs look exactly the same as their predecessors: brilliant, glossy, edge-to-edge screens; that lovely 16:9 aspect ratio (just like an HDTV); and Apple’s signature brushed aluminum. But it’s what’s on the inside that truly sets the latest iMac apart.

    FaceTime for Mac Review

Once exclusively the province of iOS users, FaceTime for Mac now lets you reach out and touch someone from your computer—or see how they look the morning after the big party. We’ll skip the usual buildup—yes, FaceTime for Mac is great for making high-quality video calls to friends and family on iOS devices and other Macs over Wi-Fi. But as futuristic as that killer feature is, FaceTime’s contact management needs to catch up with the 20th century.
