    McTiVia Wireless Mac-to-TV Connection Review

No, it’s not a yogurt that makes your Mac, um, run more smoothly. But McTiVia could dramatically improve how much you enjoy your Mac by wirelessly beaming your Mac’s display to your TV. There’s a catch or two, but just take a moment to think about how awesome it’d be to slap your OS X Desktop on your big screen and watch videos, surf, or even check email while your Mac hums away efficiently in another room.

AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule Review

Your Wi-Fi router is the unsung hero in your computer setup. It’s probably the thing you think about the least -- and in many ways it’s the most important link in your electronic chain. After all, your router is what keeps your iMac, MacBook, iPhone, and iPad connected to the internet, not to mention all the other stuff you’ve got sipping bits, like game consoles, TiVo boxes, and internet radios. Apple’s latest AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule are essentially minor updates, but if you’re a Mac user in need of a new router, both are extremely good options.

    MediaShare Media Server Review

Someday we’ll magically enjoy all our media whenever we want, wherever we want—and without compromises. That day will probably also involve puppies riding rainbows. But until that dream comes true, we’ll play our music and movies over cloud-based services or hardware like Verbatim’s MediaShare network drive. It streams files to local computers and game consoles, exports photo albums to social media sites, backs up your Macs with Time Machine, shares connected printers, and—wait, there’s more!—lets you access your files over the internet from computers and iOS devices. Despite this Swiss Army streamer’s strengths, we were disappointed by its cumbersome setup and the need to maintain a subscription to use MediaShare’s most powerful features.

    AT&T 3G MicroCell Review

I live in what’s called a “fringe coverage area” for AT&T. I get one or two bars on my iPhone 4 when I’m home. Calls sometimes drop, and callers often complain about the connection quality. Outside of moving or hoping AT&T builds a cell tower nearby, the best option to improve call quality is AT&T’s 3G MicroCell. Made by Cisco, the 3G MicroCell is a “femtocell”--a cellular base station that covers up to 5,000 square feet, according to AT&T. The device connects to your home broadband network, and it can tremendously improve cell phone reception in your house.

    Sherwood NetBoxx R-904N Review

Why doesn’t this great audio receiver include great audio/video streaming tools? The NetBoxx R-904N sounds good, but its streaming is more annoying than awesome. You have to dig up your own Mac software, you’ll fight the weak interface, and you’ll be rewarded with video-resolution issues. We’d hoped that this one box could rule our A/V needs, but you’re much better off buying a standard audio receiver and an Apple TV.

Sometimes, a petite little thing of a bag just doesn’t get the job done. For instance, photographers and videographers are often burdened with the strenuous chore of hauling around lots of bulky gear. Most backpacks and laptop bags are unable to hold the mountain of cables, memory cards, cameras, compact discs, manuals, small children, pets, snacks, and other sorted equipment it takes to get the job done. Fortunately, Booq laptop bags provide the kind of support you needs to comfortably transport anything without breaking your back.

After months of unconfirmed rumors about its maybe, possibly imminent arrival, Western Digital finally released its next-generation WD TV media player--just mere days after we finished our Dec/09 issue, in which we named the previous-gen model as one of our “2009 Gear of the Year” favorites. We had a few niggling criticisms of that earlier version, but in the latest model, Western Digital has made some excellent improvements to what became our favorite set-top box for media playback.

Depending on where you live and work, it can seem like the Internet is everywhere. But sadly, a good Wi-Fi signal can be lacking when you need it most--and the days of open home–Wi-Fi networks are mostly gone, as even your mom has figured out how to lock down her network. But with Verizon’s MiFi in your pocket, you can access the Internet from just about anywhere.
