    SuperMegaUltraGroovy Capo Review

If you’re a guitarist, Capo is the bionic upgrade you wish you could give your ears. Drag any track from your iTunes library into Capo, and it quickly displays the music as visual data--a spectrogram full of blue smears. Those smears represent notes in the recording; the smears near the top are the higher-pitched notes and the ones below are the lower pitches. Click the cursor on a spectro-smear to hear its corresponding MIDI note. If that note is part of the solo or chord you are trying to figure out, drag the cursor on it a bit and, like magic, a tablature number appears below, showing you exactly where to place your fingers on your guitar.

Since Apple bought Lala, the online music store that lets you upload and stream your computer’s music online, speculation has swirled about when Cupertino will bring the feature to iTunes. If you’re sick of waiting, mSpot lets you enjoy your Mac’s music from a browser on almost any computer. While the service has room for improvement, it also puts your music in the cloud with a minimum of fuss.

    SoundHound for iPad Review

SoundHound takes Shazam's pioneering song-recognition approach to a whole new level, letting you not only identify recorded songs, but also use your own vocal cords to generate a result. The ability to sing or hum a few bars of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" or Rihanna's "Rude Boy" and get a correct identification is pretty mind-blowing, and a testament to the power of SoundHound's inner workings.

    AmpliTube iRig Review

Guitar amplifiers have been going through an identity crisis lately. For years, one amp with a good sound was all fine and dandy, but then digital technology figured out how to capture and cram the sounds of many amps into one program--and who doesn’t like choice? Now the realm of digital amp emulation comes to Apple’s handhelds with AmpliTube, aided and abetted by the iRig adapter, and the results are rocktacular.

Internet radio offers options well beyond the powers of old-fashioned broadcasting, but something’s still missing--that’s because many music apps don’t go the extra mile themselves to let you record internet-radio streams. Radio Gaga plays and records thousands of stations, but the more you try to do with it, the more you’ll only hear static.

    iRingPro Origin, Tek, and Zen

If you’ve ever found yourself diving for your phone to silence an embarrassingly juvenile ringtone (mine is a Guns N’ Roses song, but I don’t embarrass easily), iRingPro can keep you from being “that guy.” Sure, you could just use one of the iPhone’s 25 packed-in ringtones, but how generic is that? iRingPro’s Origin, Tek, and Zen collections offer ringtones of sophisticated taste and style. But they’re more than just nifty sounds--they’re thoughtfully designed for the needs of the iPhone user, who, let’s face it, is used to a top-notch experience all around.

nehalem processorWe all know that iTunes can be a bit of a resource hog when you're playing music through it while Photoshopping cats' faces onto your friends' heads and browsing for pictures. But apparently for some users, it can be even more of a problem.

There are two camps in the world of DJing--analog purists and the cutting-edge digital folks. The purists hold on to their vinyl like children clutching their favorite toy, while the digital folks look for the best way to rock the house and steer clear of the poor house. The latest update to djay by algoriddim allows you to rock the beats without breaking the bank.

    Apple Logic Studio

Apple threw a fastball to the chin of third-party software publishers when it introduced the Logic Studio bundle a few years ago. This pro-level music-creation package offers a be-all/end-all combination of MIDI and audio recording tools, with a cool side helping of MainStage, which brings Logic to live performances. Our last review of Logic Studio pointed out that the guitar-processing capabilities were a bit on the weak side, but Apple has made improvements in the newest incarnation of Logic Studio. The latest package includes new features that immediately made our “must-have” list, and our guitar fetish has been amply satiated with rather stunning new amp and effects emulations.

Soundtrack Pro is a multitrack audio editor intended to be used as part of a video workflow, though it’s equally adept at standalone audio projects. It was once sold separately, but for the last few years, it’s been available exclusively as part of the Final Cut Studio and Logic Studio bundles. The latest incarnation, version 3, offers a wide range of fine-tuned interface tweaks and a few new tricks that will make anyone who produces pro audio take notice.
