In a world studded with Photoshop-style image editors and Painter-like natural-media tools, it’s really tough to find a new kind of artistic software that brings something truly unique and innovative to the table. But the little-known Studio Artist 4 totally pulls it off, delivering a one-of-a-kind creative application that can craft visuals like nothing else—if you’re prepared to spend some time mastering its intricacies.

The iPhone doesn’t make conference calls easy. Sure, it’s possible, but it’s far from user-friendly. Same goes for texting a group. So if you’ve been jonesing for a better way, Callvine’s your answer.

    Hulu Plus Review

Our trusty TiVos can’t be everywhere at once. Sometimes, something great will happen that we didn’t record, and we won’t catch the snappy references at the next day’s staff meeting. For instance, did you see Neil Young sing the “Double Rainbow” song? For missed moments like these, Hulu Plus serves up a massive roster of TV shows and a smattering of movies to quell our pop-culture needs. You’ll be able to quote lines from old favorites--“It’s a floor wax and a dessert topping”--and recent hits. But before you mumble, “I want to go to there,” be warned that Hulu Plus still might leave you out of the loop at that meeting. In spite of the great iPad and iPhone apps, it omits certain episodes and other crucial features.

Since Flickr’s inception in 2004, shutterbugs have been posting their photos to flickr.com for the world to see--and comment on. And Flickery from Eternal Storms improves that experience by providing a portal that makes everything cleaner and faster.

    Linebreak CloudApp Review

Considering how wired we are, the simple act of sharing a file with a coworker is way more complicated than it needs to be. If I ask Susie to grab a screenshot for a review, we always have to pause to figure out how she should send it. Should she email it to me, IM the file over, or put it up on the server? Where on the server should she put it? It’s a huge waste of time when you consider that all we’re trying to do is share a file. CloudApp aims to simplify the process of quickly sharing files and web links, either with your coworkers, or with friends on social networks like Twitter or Facebook.

Zinio Magazine Newsstand & Reader Review

Zinio's multiplatform reader -- which lets you download digital magazines and view them on numerous devices, including iPhone and Mac -- expands to iPad in a stellar app, delivering hundreds of top publications with single issue and subscription purchases. At launch, the Zinio app displayed a few frustrating stumbles, including slow-loading pages and blurry text when zooming. Luckily, numerous post-release updates have largely addressed these quibbles, making for a worthwhile reading experience on the iPad.

Unlike some of the other stock market apps available on iPad, StockWatch isn't free -- but what you're paying for is slightly more in-depth portfolio monitoring, an easy to use and solidly attractive interface, and the ability to sync your data between multiple iPads or iPhones.

    Twittelator for iPad Review

Twittelator's edge among the current crop of unofficial iPad Twitter apps is its large feature set. While most users will be fine with the standard array of tweets from those you follow, mentions, and direct messages, Twittelator also includes a large number of themed channels (like sports and politics), which spotlight top tweeters in several smaller categories. You can also set up your own lists of Twitter users, should you want to create your own personal channels instead of reading one big feed.

NYT Editors' Choice Review for iPad

While not as meaty or fully featured as the actual newspaper (or its website), The New York Times' first stab at an iPad reader is a clean and easy-to-read digest of handpicked news stories, features, and editorials. Whether in portrait or landscape orientation, NYT Editors' Choice scales nicely to your preference, delivering clear text, sharp photography, and simple commands that let you quickly change pages with a single tap or swipe.
