    Adobe Story Plus Review

Hollywood is a veritable poster child for Apple products, where Macs have long been favored over Windows for creative tasks from scriptwriting through post-production. While Adobe has offered solutions for the latter almost from the company’s inception, it has only recently dipped its toes into the former with the cloud-based Story.

    Sound Forge Pro Mac Review

Audio editing applications come and go like the seasons — Bias Peak and Apple’s Soundtrack Pro are now history, and while GarageBand, Logic, and Adobe Audition all vie for attention (along with Audacity and a few others), Sony has finally brought the popular Windows editor Sound Forge Pro to the Mac. While this should warm the hearts of Mac musicians and audio engineers, the fact is that this first version has enough rough spots to give us some pause in considering it ready for prime time.

    Parallels Desktop 8 Review

The latest solution from Parallels for virtually running Windows (or other OSes) on a Mac, Desktop 8 boasts speed improvements and other enhancements such as support for 32GB of RAM. But as with its competitor VMWare Fusion 5, there aren’t many headline improvements over the previous versions.

    Curio 8 Review

If Evernote and Keynote and NovaMind all got together and had a baby (never mind the mechanics, OK?), the offspring might look a little like Zengobi's Curio. A virtual whiteboard with presentation capacities, Curio has the organizational chops of Evernote, mind-mapping capabilities comparable to the best apps, and the ability to run slideshows with transitions, though with a limited palette.

Taken together, Curio is one fast-loading, responsive package with fantastic potential and tons of flexibility. If there's a downside, it's Curio's price: $100 for new users and $50 for upgraders.

    Persona Review

From The Odyssey to The Avengers, stories hinge on good characters. Without heroes to care about and believable villains to vex them, plot is just a bunch of stuff that happens. Persona aims to help writers organize information about their characters while using archetypes to discover what makes them tick –– and how they can interact in dramatically juicy ways. But like a well-meaning tragic hero, Persona is undone by glaring flaws.

    Firetask Review

The Getting Things Done (GTD) method of organizing tasks is a favorite among productivity seekers, and many apps support it. Firetask might be simple, but it still manages to fit in the core elements of GTD.

GTD works by following a simple three-stage approach to managing tasks: collect, organize, and review. Firetask mirrors this approach nicely, with an inbox for collecting items, a Focus section for putting them into projects, and a Review section to scheduling those tasks on a calendar. The interface is simple, making the whole process very quick and painless--after all, spending long chunks of the day tinkering with a GTD app isn’t quite as productive as actually doing your work.

    Tunesque Review

There’s plenty to like about the iTunes Store--it’s a one-stop shop for DRM-free music, loads of TV shows and movies, and more apps than we could ever want to use. There’s even tons of free stuff. But the thing that really irks us is the store itself, which you have to search using iTunes, a process that’s cumbersome, sluggish, and often downright infuriating. The idea behind Tunesque is to search the iTunes Store outside of iTunes, making the process far more efficient.

    WriteRoom 3 Review

Writing is often a thankless, solitary task requiring isolation from outside interference. Just when you least expect it, the telephone rings, new email arrives, or an interesting tweet diverts attention from the work at hand. WriteRoom can’t thwart all of life’s interruptions, but it does offer solace from most computer-based distractions with a streamlined writing environment, making it easier to get the words on the (virtual) page.
