20 Great Mac Apps Under $20

In preparing this year’s 20 Under $20 list, we loved the idea of presenting 20 killer Mac apps you might not know about — 20 is such a round, pleasant number, and would hopefully let us find something for everyone. But $20 per app might not seem like the bargain-basement price that it used to, even just back in the summer of 2011 when we did our last 20 Under $20 feature.

But guess what? Most of these polished, stable, user-friendly, and utterly useful applications don’t come anywhere close to a full Andrew Jackson, anyway. Four of them are free, and only two cost over $10. We thought about calling it “18 Mac Apps Under $10 and Also Two That Are More Than $10 But Still Less Than $20, and By the Way, Four Are Free,” but that’s just too long, wouldn’t you agree

    Satellite Eyes Review

Everyone’s a nerd about something, and maps are one of my favorite things to be nerdy about. As a kid I drew maps of my neighborhood on graph paper, and on road trips I used to pore over the AAA atlas long past the point of carsickness. So when I heard about Satellite Eyes, I installed it on all my Macs in about five minutes.

As a student, I'm always looking for a quick, easy, and, more importantly, mobile way to access my schedule of class, assignments, and social life. With Pocket Schedule Free, I've found that perfect app that is both affordable and powerful.

With its incredibly easy user interface. Pocket Schedule Free makes it easy to add and manage all of your courses for each semester. You can always refer back to a previous semester's schedule and adding assignments, tests, and social events is just as simple. Simply click the plus icon in the top right hand corner and to add a class, exam, event, or task.

    iBooks Author Review

Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes & Noble’s Nook, and even Apple’s iBooks have been working on moving us away from reading physical books and toward embracing the digital revolution. But until now, there was very little to convince us just how good an idea this could be, since digital books look very much like their real-world counterparts, right down to the page-turning effect.

    Rosetta Stone Language Course Review

I’ve been planning my dream vacation to South America for a while, complete with Evernote clippings of destinations I’m dying to see and a Gmail filter to keep an eye out for sales on flights. While the trip is still more of a dream than reality, I thought I’d get a head start on it by refreshing my Spanish. With the new updates to the Rosetta Stone language learning suite, I can get back to the basics and brush up on my conjugation without stepping foot in a classroom.

    Memorable Beers Review

When I was a young man, I stumbled upon a Ben Franklin quote that read, “Beer is proof that God exists and wants us to be happy.” I’m no longer a young man and I’ve since been told (by people much smarter than me) that Franklin probably never said that, but I adore the sentiment and the quote still hangs above my desk.

Remember those school reports you had to do in geography class, where you had to look up a bunch of data about local cities and towns? Probably not, because that's a lousy way to learn. Unfortunately, that's the WindowSeat experience too.

Part of every stereotypical tourist vacation is planning out itineraries, which generally can require a lot of time and research, and possibly cash spent on guidebooks to exotic locales. SpotWorld aims to take all -- or at least most -- of the hassle of planning expeditions by compiling all the information you need into a combo GPS, hotspot guide, encyclopedia, and light community networking app.

The Kindle, and later the iPad, have sparked a huge interest in e-books, but most merely replicate what we’re used to on the printed page. Well, that's not good enough for our former vice president. Al Gore has worked with Push Pop Press to produce something different: a digital version of his book Our Choice that takes advantage of the unique technologies offered by Apple’s iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone.

Deluxe Moon HD is an app that looks as gorgeous as the moon itself. It can provide astrologers, gardeners, and -- let’s just say it -- werewolves with massive amounts of moon-related data. Featuring a built-in compass and moon azimuth, GPS, and daily, location-based times for moonrise and moonset, the application is a one-stop shop for all of your moon-stalking needs.
