moviefoneIf you’re scrambling to find a movie listing, the iPhone can tap that data anywhere. And instead of Safari, a handful of stand-alone apps do the job better, with interfaces designed for the mobile searching. We compared Movies, Now Playing, OneTap Movies, and Showtimes to see which gives the most movie information while still being simple to use.

Check out the comparison after the jump.

Showtimes screenShowtimes provides simple movie theater box-office information see what’s playing nearby. This free version of OneTap Movies lets you scroll through a list based on ticket sales, rating, recent additions, or you can browse local theaters. While the theater list included most of our local favorites—even small locations—this scaled-back software is missing features from free competitors.

Now Playing screenOriginally named BoxOffice, Now Playing navigates the web of movie listings from your iPhone. The app hits all of the critical basics, listing theatres in proximity to your location; and movies by release date, rating, or title. The clean interface includes links to trailers and reviews. Even small theatres typically include full showtimes.

OneTap Movies screenOneTap Movies includes only the basics to find movie time listings; it shows recent movies, high-grossing movies, or theater schedules near your location. If that’s nearly all you need, the interface works well, displaying theaters with a disclosure triangle to reveal specific movies and movie times.

Movies screenMovies aptly shows current and upcoming theatrical releases. It automatically reads you location—or manually entered ZIP code—to show relevant, local results. And items are salted with relevant details; most current releases include trailers, nearly every listing shows a poster, and Movies slurps in reviews, synopses, and more.

    Image of woman training

If there’s an activity that could unequivocally be described as low-tech, meditation is it. All it consists of, after all, is sitting quietly as you clear your mind and concentrate on nothingness. Believe it or not, however, your Apple tech can help you on your journey toward nothingness—or “mindfulness” as practitioners prefer to call it. But before we detail the specific Mac- and iPod-based meditation tools, here’s a short introduction to the concepts involved.

Shooting RAW digital photos gives you the most image data possible, enabling you to reinvent your image-editing process.

Mention “digital photography” and no two people will think of exactly the same thing. For many, it may be an idea as simple as using a point-and-shoot camera to run around taking endless snaps until space on the flash memory card runs out. A quick trip to the computer to offload and they’re back in the game. While some are content with this state of affairs, others are ready to take the next step to greater photographic enlightenment, which isn’t a huge leap. And because experimentation costs you nothing—you can learn about digital photography without the expense of burning through endless rolls of film—today‘s digital cameras make the critical, and highly educational, trial-and-error process much more accessible and enjoyable.

Epicurus, that good old Greek (who is thought to have lived from around 341 to around 270 B.C.), really seemed to be onto something, believing that “the greatest good was to seek modest pleasures in order to attain a state of tranquility and freedom from fear…as well as absence of bodily pain.” (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicureanism). In the spirit of Epicureanism, here are a handful of tools you can use to enjoy food and wine without ballooning up like Dionysus.

    Starmap

Looking up at the sky, you may find yourself struck by one of the following emotions:

    A.    Awed
    B.    Worthless, when you realize how tiny and insignificant you are
    C.    Confused

If your answer is C, then perhaps it’s because you have no handy guide to the stars. But with Starmap, you’ll never be lost in space.
