    Dolly Drive Backup Utility Review

Posted 04/14/2011 at 11:30am | by Ray Aguilera

There’s a word so dirty that most computer users don’t even want to think about it. Even people who should know better, like IT techs or hardened tech journalists, quake at its mention. Backup: it’s one of the most hated words in the computer lexicon because it conjures up nothing but worst-case scenarios. Apple’s Time Machine does a decent job of backing up your stuff (if you’ve turned it on), but what if you primarily use a laptop? Or worse, what if your basement floods, claiming your camping gear and your backup drive as victims? Dolly Drive tucks your Time Machine backups into the cloud, giving you Apple’s built-in simplicity paired with the security of offsite storage in the event of a disaster.

    Thermometer 147 Review

There's no shortage of weather apps that'll give you local temperature and forecast information, but let's face it: they're not exactly infallible. Wouldn't it be neat if you could just whip out your iPhone, and not have to hunt down an actual old-fashioned thermometer?

It turns out you can, at least in theory. No current iOS device boasts temperature sensors, but Thermometer 147 claims to measure ambient air temperature using only the onboard audio hardware. Because sound waves travel faster in warmer air, one need only measure the time it takes a sound to get from speaker to microphone.

Screenwriting tool Montage wants to make your job easier, so it even includes a sample script that acts as a tutorial. Reading through the antics of “Monkey” will get you started with minimal irritation.

    Ulysses Review

Ulysses tries to carve out its niche by going back to basics -- simple organization, distraction-free writing, and something called “semantic text editing.” The screen layout is familiar -- you’ll find a project organizer on the left, the text editor in the center, and notes and metadata on the right. We began writing right away and found navigation between text documents, notes, and synopses straightforward.

    Shake Banner Review

Remember those Fourth of July sparklers you could wave in the air, so bright in the darkness they'd leave a hovering trail of light? Shake Banner works along the same lines. Jostle your iPhone about a bit and the colored letters of your short message will seem to hang in the air.

Contacts Cleaner Address Book Utility Review

Posted 03/21/2011 at 11:55am | by Peter Cohen

Every time we have MobileMe sync problems, we end up with duplicated contacts in Address Book. And over time, small human errors in data entry build up into a big mess. Beyond the very basic duplicate search in Address Book, Apple unfortunately doesn’t offer much in the way of tools to manage these situations. You can go through each contact individually, but Contacts Cleaner vaporizes much of that tedium by thoroughly scanning your data and scrubbing significant problems out of your Address Book.

How To Work In The Cloud With Google Docs

By now you’re probably familiar with Docs’ basics. But just in case: Google Docs is a web-based word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation application that stores any files you create in it, as well as files you upload. While Google Docs doesn’t offer all the functionality you’d find in Microsoft Office, its web-based collaboration features present a whole new world of utility, and these tips will help you mine Docs for everything it’s worth.

    Movie Outline 3 Review

Movie Outline takes a little getting used to. Adding different elements isn’t totally intuitive at first, and it’s more PC than Mac in style, missing traditional keyboard shortcuts (like Command-W to close a window) and menu commands (like Open Recent).

    Singlemizer File Utility Review

Now that we’re measuring storage in terabytes, it’s all too easy to just save everything, including your awful undergrad papers on Kurt Vonnegut and those photos of every second of your kid’s first year -- with the inevitable duplicates, of course. Despite our best intentions, it seems like every time we upgrade our Macs, the files multiply. Minimalistic Development’s solution is Singlemizer, a tool for finding and eliminating duplicate files. Singlemizer is powerful stuff, and it can make quick work of years’ worth of shoddy file management.
