Startup delay
I have a powermac 8500. Everytime I turn it on, there is at least a 20-30 second delay even before the monitor gets a signal and the thing even starts to boot up. My question is, why is it doing this, and what can I do to fix it?

Considering the computer doesn't even START to boot up until something is showed on the screen, I'd say it's the computer causing the delay.
I press the power button, hear the chime immediately, but then wait a long time for the monitor to get a signal, only then does the mac os start booting up.

So you press the button, few seconds later you hear the bong noise and the monitor comes on?

My guess is that the delay is caused by the startup process which is checking the RAM. You might confirm this by reducing the RAM and seeing if the startup time is reduced. If my guess is right, then there isn't much you can do about this other than getting a newer Mac.

You can turn off the startup memory tests... I think you have to hold down some combination of keys when you launch the memory control panel, then the option to disable startup memory tests is there.
