Re: Finished my first protein

can some one please explain to me the point system?? i dont get how those relate to the amout of wus you have completed. are wus not as important in folding as they are in seti??

(/me watches as she finishes her 399th seti unit since summer:D )

Re: Finished my first protein

Some proteins are worth more points than others. Because of the vastly different amount of work involved in simulating different proteins, some units will take longer to compute. These WUs are generally worth more points then.

You can view the current outbound proteins and the number of points for each.

JediKnightChewie, the race is on. I have to warn you I've been dropping a little bit lately (1 or 2 places) but with renewed focus I'll remember to keep my laptop on. My name for the Folding@Home is FosterKanig, this way you can see where I am. Let's get it on!!

At least it's a female Wookie.

Well, from my point of view, that is. I don't claim to speak for Halbie's Wookie gender preferences.  blush

I forgot that I changed to my normal name "Halbie". We ARE tied. Ignore the FosterKanig that used to be me. Do you want to race to 250 first? Any other takers?

Re: Finished my first protein

You get points, but no credit for the unit.....makes perfect sense, since the unit wasn't finished.

Now this brings me to a point....one that I'm somewhat reluctant to make, because I'm not sure how many of our "points" are gathered by unfinished units.

Unfinished units don't do the project any good, if anything it slows the entire project down somewhat, because someone else down the line has to do that unit to finish the protein.

Now in the case of Chewie, who doesn't run in OSX fulltime, one has to evaluate why they are doing the project in the first place?

It's a valid question...not a slam on Chewie (sorry if it seems I'm making an example of you Chewie) sad

All I'm saying is to keep in mind the time sensitive nature of this DC project. If you can't run OSX fulltime, Folding@home may not be the project for you.

Feel free to talk amongst yourselfs while I get ready to be assalted for bringing this up eek

Re: Finished my first protein

Well You don't have to run any OS full time to run SETI and you sure don't loose the work done and have to start WU's over again with SETI when you shut down, restart or boot to OS 9 for a few minutes or even a day or two.  There are very resonable purposes to shut down a computer and or boot to OS 9 occassionally.  The criterea laid out at the Folding web sight  dosn't say any thing about not shutting down the computer.  I think that the work units may be to big and definatly the software is       still not as smooth as it could be.

Re: Finished my first protein

How about leaving folding running all the time using the command-line client http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegrou … SX-3.12.gz .  Here's what I do:

1) Open Terminal
2) Drag OSX-3.12 to the Terminal
3) Bring Terminal to the front
4) Press & and [enter]

Now, when you quit the Terminal and logout, Folding will continue to run.

it says permission denied

Wow, I didn't notice your reply till just now.

Ah yes.  I left out a step. blush Here are the instructions for the new client (v3.24).  Note step  #3.  This makes the client executable.

1)  Kill the old client
2)  Download the new client and expand it
3)  Open Terminal and type chmod +x and [space]
4)  Drag FAH3Console-OSX to the Terminal
5)  Bring Terminal to the front and press [enter]
6)  Drag FAH3Console-OSX to the Terminal
7)  Bring Terminal to the front and press & and [enter]
8)  Quit the Terminal

I am preparing to have my arms ripped off. 44% through the next one. I don't know how big it is, but I'm hoping it is enough to regain the lead.

Re: Finished my first protein

JediKnightChewie, I have bad news, well not for me. I am purchasing a new iMac this week. But you have my word, I will NOT set up Folding on it until our little competition is over. I am all about the purity of the "sport." I am now 80% through the next one, I am curious to know how many points it is worth. As always, good luck. And no matter matter who wins, Folding wins!

Don't want to ruin the suspense, but if you're curious, you may find the answer here:

Re: Finished my first protein

I knew there was a way for me to find out, but I couldn't remember it. Now, I don't know if I should find out, or wait for the surprise. Xmas is soooo far away, maybe I need to wait to find out the points. Thanks.

yeah, i only have folding running on one computer (part time, other computer is in 9 doing seti, because rest of family hates x and hates me leaving computers in x), and im maybe 40% of the way done with my next unit (i think i lost all my info after having to restart once... not sure, im running the command line one now and its not as graphical as the graphical version tongue), im not even sure if ill make the deadline date, let alone beat you, but well see what happens big_smile. anyways, after the competition good luck on folding with your new computer big_smile. congrats on the new computer. i myself just got a "new" 7600 last month, but i doubt ill be doing much folding on it big_smile wink (at least not untill im willing to shell out the dough for a sweet processor upgrade)

Re: Finished my first protein

dang, the unit im almost 60% done with is still going to leave me 12 points short of where 200th place currently lies.

oh well, game is still up for grabs (unless halbies almost finished unit is worth uber points) depends on how quickly well be able to finish our next units

wheee, this is fun big_smile

Re: Finished my first protein

Alright Chewie, the protein I was working on I sent in this morning. I never looked up how much it was worth, so in a few hours I am going to start checking the stats pages.
