Bill O'Reilly: "I like really horrible music!"

First of all, I didn't see this myself.  I read about it on a music-related message board.  Now, naturally, my gripe is certainly not with the fact that O'Reilly appears to like Yanni.  I couldn't possibly care less about that.  My problem lies with O'Reilly's portrayal of the Smashing Pumpkins.  It almost seems as though he just picked the name of a random band out of his ass and decided to slander them on his show.  The Smashing Pumpkins were never focused on talking about "satanic rituals" or "carving people up" in their music.  This is complete bullsmurf.  I'll be watching the Factor tonight to see if he reads any letters regarding this or if he comments on this.  What follows is the transcript I got from the web board.  If it's not exact, I apologize.  Maybe Jayhawk or someone who saw the show can set me straight if it's not correct.

Yanni (responding to why the press ridicules him): I'm an easy target.

O'Reilly: Why are you an easy target?

Yanni: Maybe because I'm a straight man. I believe, I have faith in humanity, I tend to be on the nice side, I have faith---

O'Reilly: You're not dark?

Yanni: No.

O'Reilly: You're not like Smashing Pumpkins.

Yanni: No.

O'Reilly: You see, I never get this, because whether you like your music or not, I mean it's nice music...

Yanni: Right...

O'Reilly: [John] Tesch does nice music. And then, you guys get nailed, and Smashing Pumpkins, who are talking about satanic rituals and people cutting themselves up, they love that. What is that? That dark side...?

Yanni: I have no idea.

*Again, as a disclaimer, I realize that this could be completely fabricated, seeing as I didn't see it and just read the account and supposed transcript from this web board.  If it's not true, or if it's inaccurate, I apologize.  I'm just going off of the information I have.*

Re: Bill O'Reilly: "I like really horrible music!"

Bill O'Reilly is satanic. And Yanni sucks more than John Tesch. Maybe if they had some goddamn talent people would stop ragging on them.

And I don't believe for a minute Yanni's straight.

The only thing the Pumpkins are guilty of is making really annoying music.

Kinda like Radiohead?  wink

Well this we can agree on.

And I'll see your Annoying Music and raise you one Inflated Ego of Billy Corrigan.

Every now and again that guy pops up on my music radar and the most annoying crap just starts falling out of his mouth and I find myself hoping he'll get run over by that f'ing ice-cream truck from that f'ing video.

When did they start considering Radiohead to be 'music'?   tongue

I'm sure O'reilly will dig out some out of context lyric from a Smashing Pumpkins song to prove his point with a big helping of his condesceding, bullsmurf attitude.

O'Reilly is a tool.

I really would like to know if he actually said that or if it's just Internet BS. Isn't there a site that keeps track of all that stuff?

The Smashing Pumpkins singing about satanic rituals?  I don't think so, Bill.  The only thing the Pumpkins are guilty of is making really annoying music.

Lord, I actually agree with Jayhawk about something.

Re: Bill O'Reilly: "I like really horrible music!"

In 1998 Katy and I went to see Bauhaus on their reunion tour. The first night Billy was in the audience, and the second night he came on stage to sing a song with them.

After the show there was a group of autograph seekers hanging out by the stage door. Katy was there taking pictures. Every time the stage door would open, the crowd would surge forward, only to fall back in disappointment when it was a roadie or something. Then the door opened and Billy came out. The crowd surged forward, then fell back disappointed. Not one person asked him for an autograph.

All I could find was confirmation that Yanni was a guest on O'Reilly on February 10, 2003.

This Bill feller sounds like a complete tool. The Pumpkins are way too pop to be satanic.

I'm pretty much positive that this is true.  There were enough people on the message board that saw it.

Re: Bill O'Reilly: "I like really horrible music!"

I wasn't watching, but the show was on, and when I heard him say "Smashing Pumpkins" I looked up from my book. When he said 'Satanic Rituals', I went back to my reading.

So yeah, I can confirm that he said that; he also posts transcripts of his interviews on his foxnews web site, if you're interested enough.

I'll give him credit, he's never claimed to be a hard news journalist and anything he says is his opinion, not necessarily fact.
I just don't care what his opinions are.

Radiohead? They'll fall by the wayside in a few years. Trendy and pretentious.

Now Soundgarden, Nirvana, AIC... that's the real deal.

I'm going to leave it at that.

Pretentious?  Yes.  Trendy?  Goodness no.  Radiohead couldn't be less trendy if they tried.

Trendy to like them.

IMHO, my idea of innovative music is Guru, Nas, Street Poets, Sun Ra, and Screeching Weasels.

But on the whole, I'm hopelessly in love with Classic Soul and Funk-- "Old School."

Wow. I haven't heard a "my band rocks and your band sucks" argument since I was...oh...about 13. Keep it up! It's good for a laugh! big_smile

Hey DreamkastOr,

Don'tcha just hate it when everyone is off on such a tangent, that you post subject isn't even addressed?(okay, except for my last reply).

Or maybe no one wants to admit they watch O'Reilly by inference - by addressing your question.blush

Or maybe I'm just obtuse and I'm missing something.
Again. shrug

Rock on, Everybody!
