New computer names?
I had a thought yesterday while I was milking cows of all things. What is Apple going to call the new Macintels? We have the Power Macintosh G5 now, but the Power monkier refers to the Power PC, which will no longer be used, and the Intel chips aren't the 6th generation of the PPC. Does anyone have a thought as to how they would name the new computers? Would they go back to numeric models (7300/200, etc) or would they keep the current naming scheme for the new machines? I was just curious as to what others thought. I can see the iMac, Mac Mini, and eMac stay the same name, but what about the Powerbook and Power Mac?

Re: New computer names?
I'm sure they'll stay "Powerbook" and "Powermac" - but gods know what will go on the end (usually G4, or G5).

PowerBooks came out before Apple made the jump to PPC.

iMac Core Duo, 1.83 GHz AKA Pegasus
PowerBook 12'' 1.5 GHz... no nickname yet.

Hrm, I'm not sure, but I can hear that annoyingly fast voice-over from the Dell commercials on the Apple ones now: "Apple computers use Intel Pentium *insertnamehere* processors".

Re: New computer names?
Suggestion: Apple Power Mac I. (That's the letter "eye" not the number "one".)
On the other hand, they may decide to call it "G6". It would be more comforting to Mac users uneasy with change.

They can't call it a G6, unless they want to enter competition with Pontiac and the like.

It'll probably be the same number as the P4 inside it. Powermac 680, or Powermac P680 or some such thing.

I think Canon makes a digital camera called the PowerShot G5.

Well whatever it is, it better not be G5, because that would just be confusing as hell.

Re: New computer names?
if they call it the g6, they are implying that the p4 is superior to the g5. It will probably be named the powermacintel, or the powermac P4.

Okay, now I am pissed. If I buy a G5 it should take pictures and fly me around the country. Angry e-mail time.

Re: New computer names?
It is hard to guess because this is such a radical change. Even with the 68k --> PPC shift, the processors were from the same company and the transition was pretty seamless for the end user. This will be a bigger shift than that I believe.

Universal binaries and Rosetta. The transition will still be pretty seamless.

Re: New computer names?
To the average user, probably. But I think the hardcore users will find lots of new things to play with and hack. Plus, they are switching the entire base architecture and even companies. I really don't have much of a problem with switching to Intel, as long as Apple still makes great computers and keeps the quality/customer service aspect of the whole thing superb.

I think it's time Apple started using other varieties besides "Macintosh". For instance...
I can imagine the threads here: "I just bought a Winesap!!!" "Best video card for a Red Rome?" "Braeburn vs Fuji: which should I get?"
