actually I donated to the Red Cross,I forgot all about that 9/11 controversy. ah well. hopefully, most of what we donate gets to the people who need it. But you never know.

Maybe the best place to send money is somewhere smaller, more local; somewhere closer to the site.
And don't forget that outfits like the Red Cross are only there for the short term ... there's going to be halla need for help with reconstruction.
I believe I'm voting for Habitat for Humanity.

A few city governments are now doing something that may make a heck of more difference than donating to national charities that try to help the refugees, while keeping them congregated in the three state area. They have volunteered to take in refugees. They include Detroit and Portland. I hope that citizens in other cities will lobby their governments to do the same. Spread out, more can be done regarding real housing instead of cots in coliseums. Local charities will be provided excellent opportuniteis to put their money where their mouths are.

Even Sean Hannity of Fox News' "Hannity and Colmes" couldn't put a flag-waving spin on the squalid conditions outside the convention center in New Orleans Friday night. He did try, of course, but his own correspondents wouldn't let him get away with it.
In this clip, Geraldo Rivera and Shepard Smith express indignation and dismay at the horrible conditions suffered by the thousands of people still trapped there Friday night. Smith reported that the storm survivors were not told when they'd be rescued, after days of waiting. Worse, they were actually prevented from exiting the area at a checkpoint manned by guards.
Amidst Rivera's tears and Smith's outrage, Sean Hannity tried to take it down a notch, in his words "let's get this in perspective." Wasn't the National Guard just around the corner? But Smith shut him down interrupting: "This is perspective!"
Even within Fox's reassuring coverage of Katrina, reality sometimes intrudes. Now that those refugees have finally been rescued from New Orleans, let's hope their stories still make it on the air, even on Fox. ---- Salon.com's Katharine Mieszkowski

Are the schools giving people a hard time about registering evacuee kids? I signed up for Moveon's housing registry, but I'll bet anything that my school district will say these people couldn't register w/o proof of vaccinations, birth certificates, and permanent address and property taxes paid on same.
(I had this problem when I got a foster daughter. She's the only foster teenager in our county! Incredible but true. When I tried to register at the local public HS, they said she couldn't come even though she's living in my home although the caseworker and I had everything needed except her original birth certificate. I had to point out that she was court-ordered to go to that particular school as part of her probation and it would be stupid to keep her out and make us get a court order from the judge to accept her without the birth certificate.)
Damn bureacracies.

In St. Louis County, public schools are taking in any students displaced by Katrina. There is a relief center near me that is able to hold 150-300 people and our schools are ready to take any students in that will be staying there. Here's what they have to say from a letter to parents:

We will conduct careful educational and medical screening for these students who enroll in our schools.
Many Rockwood staff members, including a majority of our nurses, are volunteering to help in the Relief
Center or to help the Center set up.
It looks like the schools are providing everything it takes to get the students back in school.
