Favourite classic platformer.
The topic says it all, what is your favourite platformer?
I myself would have to go with Megaman X, it's large amount of challenges, cool bosses (I like that each has a weakness), and it's catchy techno souindtack gives it everything a platformer should have.
The runner up I would say is Mario 3. Well because it's Mario3, but it's not as original as MMX=.

I'm giving a second vote for Mega Man X, other members of my permanent platformer collection: Yoshi's Island, Earthworm Jim, Mario All Stars, Donkey Kong Country and Super Bonk.

My favorite was probably using the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge to play Sonic 2 as Knuckles, though there was an absolutely kickass & addicting Mario game where you played as Yoshi that I tried a couple of times.

There are a lot of good ones.
But Gunstar Heroes would have to be mine.

Re: Favourite classic platformer.
Using "classic" to mean 2D although not necessarily old, there are too many great ones to count. Any and all of the NES and SNES Mario games, although Mario 3, Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Island all deserve special mention. Castlevania Symphony of the Night for the PS1 is an all time classic, and CV Aria of Sorrow on the GBA hold the legacy high. Super Metroid is a fantastic game and without question in the upper echelon. I was never a huge fan of the Sonic series, but the Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles duo definitely deserves mention.
I love 3D as much as the next guy, but there really is something to be said for an old school 2D platformer.

Skullmonkeys. 2-d platformer with claymation graphics by the creator of Earthworm Jim. The 1970's levels are insanely tacky!

Was Blaster Master the game where you went underground with your little tank vehicle, and could pop out as needed to go shooting on your own?

Re: Favourite classic platformer.
Oh, Vectorman. Does it still count as being a 2D console game when it had "3D" graphics? Are we just counting 2D as movement?

It's no different than any of the Donkey Kong Country games, so yeah.
Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3
Super Mario World
Sonic 3D Blast
Yoshi's Island
Super Metroid
Mega Man 1-6 (although 1 was lame with all the disappearing platform challenges)
Some of the Tiny Toons games were fun too.
I hope 2D never dies. If anything, games should move toward 3D graphics with 2D gameplay, since the technology nowadays (even in the new portables) have enough horsepower to make sprite-based designs seem archaic.

I don't know what the future holds,
But I'll be waiting, proud and bold.

Re: Favourite classic platformer.
If you can call the PlayStation 1 a classic system add Castlevania: SOTN and Skull monkeys to the list, if you're looking for a new platform classic take Viewitful Joe for a spin.
I always considered the Metroid and Contra games to be action/adventures not platformers, Contra III: The Alien Wars still kicks so much ass even 13 years later. Has it really been that long? Damn I feel old.

Yup. That's the one. The biggest PITA was that there was no save or passwords, so you had to finish the game in one sitting. It was suprisingly deep and introduced a lot of elements found in games today. As an example, at one point in the game you get the ability to hover and fly up in the tank. Once you get that ability you have to backtrack to the first level in the game and fly up to a point you couldn't reach before to advance.

Commander Keen and Duke Nukem 2. Those were awesome platformers way back when. Ahh, the Apogee days...
