Tiger + UT2004 = Very long load map times?
Ever since I upgraded to 10.4...my G5's load times with UT2004 are absolute crap. No other way to describe it.
First off it seems to take a lot longer to reconnect to servers during map changes (the black screen where it displays the IP - used to be very fast), and then the actual map load is horrible. People beat me in the game by a long shot now that I used to load on par with. Even people who need to DL the redirected custom maps beat me in by a few seconds.
This is very very annoying...especially on servers where the match starts automatically...so then I'm stuck in limbo as the match goes on. Another slap to the face is if I need to wait for the Anti-TCC to do it's checks after I finally finish loading.
This has all gone bad right after 10.4. 10.3 was perfectly fine and pretty fast. Nothing has changed in the game's config or anything, and I even tried turning off caching and preload all player skins to see if that would help (which it didn't). I've tried reinstalling 10.4 with an archive and install, repaired permissions, booted off the install disc and repaired disk. Nothing has worked.
The long loads happen offline, online and on different servers/game modes/maps. Even reloading the same map takes forever.
Now my questions are:
1. Anyone else have this problem?
2. Anyone have any suggestions as to what may be wrong?
The G5 in question has the specs listed in my signature. I've also encountered this problem with my iBook...but I don't play the game on it so I'm not too worried about that. (Same 10.3 to 10.4 load time problem.)

Re: Tiger + UT2004 = Very long load map times?
Actually I think the load times increased with the last UT2K4 update. I say this because it is noticeable on both my G5 and PC. This is also true of initial boot of UT2K4 on both systems.

Re: Tiger + UT2004 = Very long load map times?
Hmm...well I never noticed it from 3339 to 3355, maybe it was longer even though the patch claimed to decrease it. This though happened from 10.3 (which was running the 3355 patch) to 10.4 (still 3355). The load time was increased significantly through the os update somehow for me.

Re: Tiger + UT2004 = Very long load map times?
Well my G5 has just been screwed with the most recent security update
and it looks like there is nothing to do but a disk wipe and re-install. On the up side this will give me a reason to dump most of the crap from my UT2K4 install and see if there is a difference in startup and load times. ARRRRRGH!

Yeah that's it exactly. Different from map to map, but god it's so long now regardless.
I considered the fresh install route...but I only have a few custom maps and the 3 bonus packs out there (CBP1/2 and ECE), so it's mostly maps, no other custom content really. Maybe a couple skins from the CBP2.

holy crap, i installed 10.4 and all the updates yesterday and UT2k4 took hell of a long time to boot up. Aslo I agree with Socamx, "Even people who need to DL the redirected custom maps beat me in by a few seconds."
I think I might try disk Worrior and see if that helps. But then again, that DW CD loads hella slow also

I don't have the game for my Mac, but it sounds like Spotlight might be the culprit. Does adding the UT folder to the spotlight exceptions list help? Adding all of my game folders to that list was one of the first things I did after installing Tiger.

well since it seems you can not add the app itself how do you add it?

Re: Tiger + UT2004 = Very long load map times?
Hmm this may have helped a little but it still seems long.
I put both the game itself in the privacy thing for Spotlight and the application support folder.
It did help a little but I'm not too sure yet.
Edit: Okay after some testing, my load times are back to their fast speeds but it doesn't help why it takes so long to connect to servers during map changes (staring at the black screen while everyone else is already on their way loading). I know it's not my server because I've tried it all over the place. Takes forever for the game to start loading, but once it does it's fast now.
Thanks for the help Altivec. Never would have thought Spotlight would be doing this, guess I'll add my entire Games folder on ignore.

I agree with socamx, loading between maps connecting to the server is taking way too long, and at times if you have a full server with full spec's, you will find yourself with a new screen telling you the server is full by the time yu load!

Yep, I was just bonked off an Atari Demo server the same way you describe. Bummer.

Re: Tiger + UT2004 = Very long load map times?
This is definitely becoming a real pain for me...just sitting there staring at a black screen for awhile while everyone else loads and gets into the map, then staring at the load screen hoping the match doesn't start by the time I get in then waiting for cheat protection to scan me. Usually I get killed right off the bat because of the long wait, match starts then cheat protection scans lock me in place till they finish. Fun starting matches at a disadvantage...
The spotlight trick only worked for a little while but it's affect seems to have worn off, I'd completely disable spotlight but then I wouldn't even have the old OS X search to fall back on to find files...so I'm at a loss there or else I would try that too.
I can only hope that G5 users *might* have a shot at getting a 64bit version of the game which on the Linux side of the X86 world seems to have really sped up load times for them. Be nice to get a taste of the same thing.
Anymore suggestions for this annoyance?
Everything I've tried:
Reinstalling the game.
INI Tweaks such as disabling skin caching, pre-cache etc.
Adding the game to the spotlight ignore and the folder it's in.
Adding the ~/Library/Application Support/Unreal Tournament 2004 folder to spotlight ignore as well.
Disabling/quitting every possible program that might touch the hard drive while the game is running.

Re: Tiger + UT2004 = Very long load map times?
You I did a complete re-install of Ut and found everything loads quickly. But as you start to download or install new maps this slow loading begins.
*Just a note I have stopped spotlight from searching all UT folders*

Re: Tiger + UT2004 = Very long load map times?
Don't waste your time trying to do re-installs and stuff; it's not you, it's the game. I am a regular on an Invasion server and have the exact problem all of you do. First the loading screen takes forever and a day, then I am stuck for a bit with the damn anti TCC thing, which in the case of higher enemy waves, means by the time I can actually move, I am dead (out). Even disconnecting and RE-connecting takes forever where in contrast PCers I know go off and come back on in mere seconds.

It's never been patch related for me, only 10.4 related. 10.3 was fine with all versions of the game, new install or patched up. 10.4 is not fine with all versions. I have spotlight ignoring all UT2004 related directories to no avail. Loads are same either way. Only other thought is maybe to try and completely disable spotlight, but I need it...

So what about the new 10.4.6 patch? Any luck there?
An exact type of thread is on the unrealtournament.com forums. Mac users reporting long load times there too.

Re: Tiger + UT2004 = Very long load map times?
I haven't been playing UT2004 much lately but I'll give it a quick try and see if it is any different with 10.4.6.
Could you provide a link to that other forum thread so I and others can look over it real quick?
Edit: Well after a quick few tests of map loads and server connections it still seems slow as molasses to me.
