Re: My New Ford Focus!
Damn Ford Focus! Last night, after waiting tables for 4 freaken hours, my car broke down on the on ramp from Washington Avenue to I-90-94-39. I was so pissed! People were pointing at me and laughing, I think somebody mouthed what'd you think, it's a Ford. After holding up traffic for an hour or so, the tow truck along with the help of the Wisconsin Highway Patrol pulled me off to the side of the road. Now I'm stuck taking the bus from my apartment to the campus. This SUX! Don't buy a Ford!

No it's not. This is an attempt to apply your phony-baloney-plastic-banana-good-times-rock-and-roll-nothing-is-incorrect-so-everybody-can-feel-good-about-themselves mentality to the rules of grammar. I'm sorry (not really), but it's just not right. What you describe is an adjective. Further, so used, is an adverb. The context of the sentence above requires "farther" not "further." Please do not further bastardize the English language with your faux rules.
Oh, and by the way, the feeling is mutual.
I just performed the linguistic equivalent of August 6, 1945 and debbiedowner would be Hiroshima.
Nope. 'Cause you missed the target. (and were wrong)
What I said above re further/farther is absolutely correct. Learn the rules so you know when to break them.
(And I do know the rules of grammar and definitely do break them when it serves the purpose of language, i.e. communication.)
You have a dictionary-reliant, high school understanding of English grammar, and your pedantic, arrogant screed indicates that you don't understand linguistics. So you really shouldn't go around attacking others when they know as much or more than you. (Not that you can imgine that scenario.)
Sorry about the Focus's breakdown, Razorworst. It must be frustrating.

ohh well, at least it broke down while it's still under warrantee.
Sounds like bum luck, I've lived in a "Ford family" all my life, and we've never had any lemons. Collectively, between my folks and I, we've owned 7 Fords with no problems.

I will always remember the ad that appeared on Jay Leno one night that was a misprint. I read "Ford Fucus". I'm not a Ford guy but I'm really sorry to hear about your break down. If it's any consolation, my old boss had his new Neon (a few years ago) break down on the way home from the dealer, so it happens to all makes. I drive a 2002 Sunfire, I'm no better off.

Me too. My father has a Focus SVT 5 door, I like it a lot, it's an acceptable substitute to my Cooper S when I'm back home.
"acceptable substitute..." - you're joking, right?
Unless you are talking about an original Cooper S, I don't see how you can prefer the Mini. However, that may be because I just really don't like the BMW Mini. I like beemers, I like (real) Minis, but they are totally different cars, and IMO the mix just feels wrong. However, I've never seen a SVT in the flesh - don't think we have them here.
They're pretty evenly matched cars, I think they might even have the exact same transmission. 170hp in the SVT vs 163 (maybe 165 with my CAI) in the MCS. The 5 door SVT weighs more, I've never driven the 3 door so I can't say how it stacks up. From my own driving experiences I've noticed that the SVT is somewhat slower off the line and personally I don't think it handles as well.
There's a good comparison here. It was close but they picked the SVT, but they didn't consider things that I found important, such as the interior (the MINI is much nicer inside than the Focus), and gas milage (the Focus has a tiny gas tank, and the SVT's 25 hwy mpg sucks it down very fast, for that reason my father never travels in his.). Of course, the biggest thing is that it's a Ford, and I think the originator of this thread showed why I wouldn't get a ford. MINI offers 24 hour road side assistance for 4 years or 50k miles. Oh but I will say that the stock exhaust on the SVT blows the MCS out of the water.

The funny thing is that having a degree doesn't mean anything, really. Many people without degrees are better qualified than many who have them.
But having a degree means that you were at least able to manage to show up to class on time, and complete your assignments, which is a desirable attribute of an employee. While that may be true for candidates with work experience, for that guy trying to land the intro position and no prior work history, I think the degree becomes more important. Example, for people with no work experience, it's highly unlikely that the guy without the degree in materials science is going to be better at engineering materials than the guy who has one.
I agree that once you get 3-5 years of work experience, your degree basically becomes meaningless.
That is why I said, "many," and not "all."

It turns out that my gas meter was off, and I ran out of gas. The car's finally out of the shop, with the problem fixed. This time, I'm hoping for better luck.

Interesting, my focus has the exact opposite problem. The reserve light comes on when you have about 25-33% of a tank left.

Re: My New Ford Focus!
I've owned 2 cars, both Fords.
--'87 Ford Thunderturd. Bought it used in '94, had only 50k mi. on it for a 7-year-old car. Worked just fine, with just the A/C breaking down & needing a new head gasket/normal maintenance from '94-'99. I put 110,000k miles on top of the 50k in those 5 years...the car served its purpose.
--'99 Ford Escort. Still driving the car now; has 70k on it, z-e-r-o problems. Have replaced the brakes, plug wires, the battery, regular maintenance...no problems at all.
My family has owned both GM & Ford cars. Our Fords have lasted longer, and have had fewer problems than any of our GM's.
My next car, though? Hopefully a Toyota Corolla, if they're not $20k in about 5 years.

Yes, but both of those problems stem from one... The problematic blue oval.
...Not to mention the loose nut behind the wheel.

I rented a Focus once when traveling. I was surprised at how nice it was, being a Honda guy who generally thinks american cars are crap. I would definitely consider buying one for my next car.
