iPod syncing problem

Okay, here's what I want to do.  When I hook up my iPod to sync the only thing I want to happen is for the new songs since the last sync to be uploaded to it.  I don't want any of my "playlists" synced (all my "playlists" are stuff I've burned to CD and I keep them around if I need to do another burn.  I do not need them on my iPod).  I figured out how to keep Podcasts off, but not playlists.  Manual method works, but is there an easier/automatic way to do it?

Thanks,
Jyri

Re: iPod syncing problem

Connect your iPod.

Go to iTunes -> Preferences -> iPod

Select "Automatically update selected playlists only" and choose your playlist

Re: iPod syncing problem

Uh...That's my problem.  I don't want to update any of the "playlists", and from how I understand it, by choosing nothing in "update selected playlists only" means that nothing gets updated..  I want to update only new additions to iTunes since my last sync.  As I said, my "playlists" aren't a playlist as most people define them.  Since I can't burn CD's from an iPod, there's no reason for me to have any of my playlists on my iPod.

Re: iPod syncing problem

I suggest you make a smart playlist with the music you want to sync to the iPod.

Re: iPod syncing problem

just let the playlists sync ... it's not really taking up any room. well they are but you fit 1000's of them on a floppy

2.66Ghz QuadCore-Nehalem w/24"LED CD ---2.2Ghz BlackMB---15" 2.4Ghz MBP(work)
Dual 2.3Ghz G5 (4G Ram, 2x 250G HD)(10.5 server)--- 400Mhz G4 PM (10.4 Server)
1.5GHz Powerbook---1.6Ghz G5 iMac

Re: iPod syncing problem

Or you could always make a playlist that contains all your music (make a smart one or something so you never have to add to it) and have that be the only playlist that transfers.

Re: iPod syncing problem

I was hoping not to have to do that, since it means I still have to manually put my new stuff into that folder & I was hoping to avoid "work", but I guess I'll have to see how that works vs doing it all manually.

Make a SMART playlist... meaning you don't have to do anything. It's all automatic. You're missing out on one of the best features of iTunes.

Smart Playlist?  Okay, I'll take a look into that and be back.

Re: iPod syncing problem

I don't have iTunes/iPod in front of me so I can't test this, but doesn't the Library sync no matter what?

Or do you have to sync at least one playlist to make the Library sync? If so, make one smart playlist with nothing in it (playcount>9000) or even a regular playlist with nothing in it, then sync only that list. I assume the Library syncs along with it.

Re: iPod syncing problem

Okay, smart playlist does what I need.  Took me 3 tries until I was able to find a way to get it to work (was incredibly easy once I figured it out.  The playlist is "No podcasts", which puts everything else into it, so that will do the job).  Was trying to get find something like "Most recent played" but for added, and couldn't find anything that worked.  3rd time I just looked at all the choices and tried to see if they'd do the job for me.  Had to go through most of the list, but there it was.

Unfortunately, Library doesn't Sync when you do a playlist sync, and I needed to exclude some things in the main library & not have clutter on my iPod menu choices.  Method I found seems to work.

Re: iPod syncing problem

Jyri,

Glad you got it working. But you know, the smart playlist will do Date Added/Is In the Last/... You could add a few other "and" rules to this and get something exactly like you wanted. If you were going for only the last X number of songs or only the last X MB of music, there are those choices too.

One thing I have found is that there is always a way to get exactly the playlist you want if the metadata is there already. Now that my large iPod is toast and I have to listen with a mini, I have learned how to scale back on what is copied from iTunes.
