PowerBook G4 update this month?

It's been a while since the last update. Anyone think they will update this or next month? I'd like to get one and a while ago I heard they'll update around September.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Agghhh! Yet another one of these posts. In my opinion, no I don't think there is going to be an update. And if there is it will be minor, with Apple switching to Intel and all.

Right. So they'll just let the PowerBooks sit without an update for another year or so.

Wait. Am I missing something? I though the Intel switch was coming in January of 06 and the Powerbooks would be the first to get them.

Actually, the timing on the whole Intel thing, and which models will receive the chips first is all speculation, and nothing more.

Re: PowerBook G4 update this month?

The timing was explicitly stated by steve Jobs at WWDC; "we will migrate to Intel CPU's starting a year from now, and expect to complete the transition in two years time."

Re: PowerBook G4 update this month?

..but it's only an assumption that the desktops will get the chips first. A better performing laptop chip may be a big motivation for the switch but upgrading the laptops before the desktops is highly unlikely. That's a helluva lot more work.

Is that the same Mr Jobs who stated, "unlike G4, this baby scale easily, G5 3ghz within 1yr! "that is 2? 3yrs ago?"

If anything, expect the notebooks to drop in price slightly all across the board.  They're basically maxxed out with features already and until they change over to Intel don't expect any real big changes.

Its different going with intel, they simply have to order chips when they need them. There will be no announcements about what will be happening with the intel, they just have to point people at intels roadmap.

Re: PowerBook G4 update this month?

Think Secret doesn't seem to think so.

Think Secret wrote:

Sources are also reporting that the pending Power Mac revision will be the last Mac upgrade of the calendar year. Contrary to other reports, Apple's PowerBook line, last revised in February with only incremental upgrades, will likely not see an upgrade before Macworld Expo San Francisco in January 2006, at the earliest.

Details on the next PowerBook have thus far eluded Think Secret sources

The article also has info on a rumoured PM upgrade.

Re: PowerBook G4 update this month?

I've posted about it before and people always cry, but for Apple to go a year+ without updated its flagship Power Book line proves they are nothing more than an ipod gadget company with a little computer biz on the side.

Multiple PC companies are offering 17" laptops with GeForce 6600/6800 graphics, 7200 rpm hard drives, dual layer DVD-RWs, resolutions as high or higher than the apple 20" display, blah blah blah, so Apple is really a disappointment when they can't match available specs while costing a lot more with older specs.  It's not just the G4 that is lacking- they need to update ALL of the other specs too.  That's something they could do TODAY if they wanted to.  Their prices are still retarded too- especially the 12" model.

Re: PowerBook G4 update this month?

Damnit, January? I was hoping for one at the latest the end of October. Do they just not have faster G4s right now? ... hmm... It has been a little too long since an update, and unless it's something significant, at least relative to the G4 chip, why would they wait until the show thing in January? So... maybe if they do release it in January at the show, it'll see a good improvement. The last good one until the Intel thing. Maybe 2GHz for the top model, and a better everything else too.
