Re: Ubuntu - Linux for human beings
Posting from Ubuntu 5.04 PPC LiveCD. This is a great OS. Virtual desktops rule. I'm considering using this on my work PC.

Re: Ubuntu - Linux for human beings
I installed the breezy pre-release on my 333mhz iMac last night...runs a little slow and gnome has some errors on it. I'm going to try putting 4.1 on there and see if it runs any better, or possibly kubuntu since it has KDE and I like KDE better than gnome.

Agreed. You can enjoy them on your Mac, too; I can't live without this program...

Glad I could help--like I said, I can't live without it. Once I saw the Fast User Switching animations feature, I was smitten.
An update for anyone who may have caught wind of my sufferings on my PB install, I got Kubuntu going on my T23 now, and it's running flawlessly. Found the TouchPoint, found the NIC. Posting this in Konquror, as a matter of fact (funny it looks about the same...
)
I like it a lot, but I'm still disappointed about how unfriendly it was to my 'Book. I now understand the AirPort card--thanks resedit--and I suppose USB trackpads are a farily new breed, but c'mon... a mouse is a mouse.
Overall, in my limited experience with it, I can see how this could be the version that really gets everyday windows users on board with Linux. I hope for the best for it in that regard, and I see it living happily on my IBM for a good time to come. However, as for my mainstay machines--why mess with perfection? OS X is as good as an OS gets.
Edit: It works with my PB's Ethernet port now! YAY!
And now I am seriously done with trolling this thread...

Re: Ubuntu - Linux for human beings
i know the multiple desktop switcher isn't a new concept, but damn is it useful.
nitpix: booting off the live CD takes far too long
brown as a default theme color is bleh
pros: um... pretty GUI?
if i really wanted to be insane, i'd just log in as "console" when my powerbook boots
i don't really know how that last bit was relevant, but i thought i'd add it in anyways.

You know what really sucks?
Linksys runs their routers on Linux. They have broadcom chips in them.
The only reason we don't have native broadcom drivers for Linux is because Broadcom won't release the source to their EXISTING driver that works with the Linksys routers.
I know they aren't obligated to - but geez, the hard part is already done - they have a driver.
If they would release the driver source, several things would happen:
a) very quickly, broadcom chips would be supported on a bunch of platforms
b) airport extreme would work (part of a) in Linux
c) they would get patches that would improve the performance of their driver in the Linksys routers
d) they sales would increase by - ah, hell, Linux is still niche enough that this point probably doesn't matter

Yeah, the latest GNOME 2.12 (even though it's an official release, but Breezy is not so it may not completely be GNOME's fault) still has some kinks in it. I just upgraded and keep getting applets crashing when I log in, as well as not being able to get the terminal to run in full screen with the "--full-screen" command for some odd reason. But I still can't stand using KDE, it's just, "too much". If you thought that 333Mhz iMac was slow with GNOME, just wait til you get KDE running with all that eye candy....
I'd probably try using XFCE instead (much snappier).

2.12 is newer than 2.12.3?

The .0 releases (2.12.0) from gnome traditionally are a bit buggy - it takes a few point releases to get smooth.
The numbering system they (and many other) projects use -
N.NN.0 = major release
N.NN.x = minor updates since N.NN.0
If NN is odd, its a developer branch and almost always something broken.
They already have a 2.13 tree which is unstable - next major release will be 2.14.0, but there will be several point releases in 2.12.x series before then.

Actually it's not too bad considering it isn't an "official" distro release for FC4. I pushed it from nrpms.net and honestly expected a lot more things to be wrong with it.
