eMac upgrade
I have an older 700 mhz eMac with a combo drive. I am running 10.2.8 with 384 mb of RAM. I was looking into a superdrive when I decided that I would rather have a bigger hard drive. Can I replace the hard drive in my eMac? If so, how difficult would it be, do I need special tools, and do I need an Apple specific hard drive? I have built a few PCs, so I am not scared to crack her open.

Re: eMac upgrade
When you buy an all in one mac, you make a commitment that you won't be upgrading anything besides ram. That's what towers are for. Shoulda thought of this before you bought the thing.

Re: eMac upgrade
Of course you can upgrade the hard drive. You can even upgrade the CD Drive to a superdrive if you want to do that also. All it takes is the directions (I can't remember the link) and a lot of guts (since you're screwing around in a CRT--those things can get dangerous).

eMac manual
Read this carefully before going in, especially the bit about removing the case and the power button.
Quite straightforward. Make sure you keep the little pads on the drive and move them to the new one (plus the pastic shield underneath the drive). I've put a 120GB drive in one, a Superdrive in another, and a new IVAD cable in another - all fairly simple.

Re: eMac upgrade
I have the same computer ... why not just buy an external HDD.?
My new la Cie 160gig is quieter and faster than the original Maxtor. If you later sell the computer you can keep the drive for some other machine.
Same story with the drives ... mb get a dvd drive as an external unit.
Just a thought!

Re: eMac upgrade
Yes upgrading the eMac is soooo simple. But becareful as to which parts you by to upgrade it. I found out you have to buy a specific Superdrive. I am selling a dvr-a05 online right now. if you would like to add a superdrive to your emac check it out. Anyone know where I can get an IVAD cable for the eMac without going through apple?
