The more you learn, the stupider you feel...
...when you screw up.
Recently moved my networking gear around, which ended up necessitating that my 1.25 MDD G4 be wireless.
Was using a Linksys "bridge" (read: gaming adapter) which seemed to be working fine, but soon began to give me problems. In no time I was rebooting the damn thing 3 or 4 times a day. Time to go AirPort.
Browsed around, found an APx card on eBay for 50 bucks after shipping (some of you are already groaning...). Card came today and I just now found the time to crack open my G4 to slap it in. No sweat, have done this dozens of times.
You can imagine my complete dismay when, with my shiny new Extreme card in hand, I came upon your typical, garden variety PCMCIA-style 802.11b AirPort slot.
Damn.
I never even THOUGHT to check on this. My pride in believing I know "all" things Mac must have gotten in my way. So dumb, and on my machine... no way to play that one down.

I once tried to tighten a screw by turning the screwdriver to the right. Man did I feel stupid.

That sort of answered the question, but not in a very helpful way...
Flashing is updating the firmware on a specific piece of hardware, such as a DVD drive. Firmware is basically software that's stored in the device. Manufacturers will routinely release firmware updates to fix bugs or support new features.

oh, btw to the original poster, you can buy a card made by Belkin that is PCI (F5D7000 I believe). It is an 801.11G PCI card that works with the Airport extreme drivers yet fits in a PCI slot. I have one in my 1.25 G4 and bought it for $30 at circuit city.

Wow, so essentialy it is driver-free? Does OS X actually recognize it as an AIrPort card?

All the time - at work I keep doing what the boss says rather than what he means. Damn me and my willfully incompetent inability to read his multi-polar mind.
Patience is a virtue of the weak for it makes them stand still long enough for the strong to crush them with ease.

Wow, that's great! I've done a bit of poking around for somthing like that, but that's better news than I hoped for. I thought for sure I'd end up using some third-party crap driver/software.
Thanks a lot!

it depends on what version of the card you get. i think version 2000 works, but i know version 4000 doesn't.

Both had a cracked head. They both run now and I sold one, but not before I spent more more than I paid for both cars.
