AirPort Express: need a base station too? And evil HP printer madness!
Hello. Within the next month or so, I'm going to get a 17 PowerBook, so I'd also like to get wireless Internet at home. I'm upgrading from an Indigo iMac 350, but still keeping it because it's in 99% operating order. Go iMac!
So I've got the iMac which will be going downstairs, most likely. The DSL modem is going to stay upstairs because the downstairs phone line somehow died, so I'll need two AirPorts to share the connection. One upstairs that goes into the modem, and one downstairs to connect wirelessly to the upstairs AirPort so the iMac can use the Internet (it doesn't support AirPort cards).
So, do I need to get an AirPort Base Station and an Express, or can I just get two Express stations?
Yes, I've read up about this on Apple's website, but I'm just trying to make sure and save some money, if I can.
And also, I've read that the USB port on the station is only suitable for printers. What about all-in-ones?
Just one more thing... this HP all-in-one that I've got (psc 1315xi) always pauses at least twice for every page it prints. It starts printing, and then stops for about 10 or so seconds. It also takes a long time to even start printing, at least a minute! I tried updating the driver via HP's website, but all that did was kill the printer. It didn't work at all, so I reinstalled the original driver.
The iMac is 350MHz and has 320MB RAM with 10.3.9. It works totally fine, except for the randomly-ejecting CD-ROM drive, which I don't mind because of the external burner. And the EPSON printer works perfectly, it's just a normal Colour 740 EPSON.
Any ideas? I'm guessing it's due to crappy software from HP. Crappy and ugly software.
Thank you for your co-operation.

Two AirPort Expresses will work just fine. Very good use for them.
The USB ports are for printing. No printer utilities will work (ink levels, etc.). My guess is that the scan, copy, fax stuff will not work off of an Express. You can share a printer connected to a computer and have much better access to all the good stuff the AIO provides.
Your printer will work better with your new PowerBook. The processor in the iMac is pretty weak compared to the PowerBook's. Don't blame HP just yet. Try it on your new toy.

Thanks for the info!
Yes, I suppose the PowerBook will have better luck with the printing.
And I'm just guessing that the EPSON software requires less processing power. Although, the EPSON was able to use Apple's printer utility for printing, and the HP uses it's own. But hopefully the PowerBook will be better with it.
I don't suppose there's a way to fix the CD-ROM drive so that it doesn't randomly eject, is there? Is it just old, or dirty, or something else?
Thank you for your co-operation.
