Daily Quota?

I left my computer running Boinc this weekend while I was out of town and came home to it sitting idle.  Checking the logs I find the message

SETI@home 10/17/2005 7:49 AM   Message from server:  (reached daily quota of 12 results)

So having a fast computer is suddenly irrelevant?

Little help here?

You may have had some kind of network error.

Re: Daily Quota?

Thanks for the reply DVP.  I had checked your response and was going to reply a couple days ago but got too busy.

Seems I did have a network error due to a power outage.  I guess I just have to wait if this happens and it will reset itself.  Is there any way to not lose a day's production everytime there is a small glitch?  A reset perhaps?  The Update and Reset in Boonc manager don't seem to have any effect.

Re: Daily Quota?

Dr.Dodge

I'm sure you already read the wiki... A network failure itself doesn't cause the problem with the quota going down. I would guess:

1) partial downloads not completed due to connection failure
2) finished WUs, but not returned in time to meet the deadline

If your connection was down for only a short time, the S@H WU deadlines are usually long enough so it will not matter.

Are you running only S@H? Ever thought about a backup project? Your idle situation screams out for a backup for just this reason. Predictor@Home has really short WU and you could set it to 1% and it would only take over when necessary.

You don't seem to be named Dr. Dodge for S@H. If you post your S@H name, maybe we could give some better advice. Good luck.

Re: Daily Quota?

Seems I am yet again on hold since  my messages say I have reached my daily quota of 26 results.

I suspect the flakey network here as the culpret.  Really annoying lol.

True, I am using my real life name this time.  I was Dr.Dodge under the classic S@H, but am using Jeff Paquette on BOINC.

I'll give some thought to a backup project.

Re: Daily Quota?

Good luck Jeff. And you might want to consider joining "Team MacAddict" instead of "Mac Addict" unless there is a reason that we seem to have a competing MacAddict team.confused

Also, if desired, you have to join a team for each BOINC project individually. There isn't a mechanism to join one team and then autojoin all the other BOINC teams of the same name. But maybe you already knew that.

And yes, it is definitely a problem on the downloading end with your quota limit. Are both of your computers on the same network? You seem to have no recent errors at all on the other one.

Re: Daily Quota?

Wow... I never caught the Mac Addict vs Team MacAddict team before.  I corrected that.

Both these computers are on the same network, incidentally.

When I looked at it the other morning, it said signature area.  I restarted the computer and it went into it's familiar holding pattern.

Re: Daily Quota?

Jeff,

You've got an interesting problem and it still is giving download errors but your quota is back to 100!?!

You could try downloading the new core client 5.2.6 just released yesterday...

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

I haven't installed it myself, but 5.2.5 seems to work fine. I can't say I had problems with 4.45 either, but it should be worth a try.

There is also a warning about the combo of Windows XP and 3D screensavers causing problems. Your 2000 box is fine, but the XP one is having intermittent download problems... and they are on the same network. I don't have a XP box to test out this theory, but you could try using a blank screen as a screensaver.

Could it be a dual CPU problem? Who knows?

One last thing... other projects have had problems when the "leave applications in memory" general prefs setting is "no." Unless you are starved for hard drive space, allowing this has solved other problems.

Again, good luck.

Re: Daily Quota?

I think in the morning I will try the new client and see if stability improves.  Makes me wish 'Ol Bondi was fast enough to run Boinc sad.

At present, I have screensavers set to none on both the XP box and the 2000 box. Both of these have a ton of HD space so I will make sure the settings are set that way.

I'll keep ya posted. smile

Re: Daily Quota?

If anyone else wants to pipe up, we all know that this forum is otherwise like a ghost town. If not, Jeff, you can always email me at derekm_boinc@IHaveADotMacAccount

And I don't know if your bad luck rubbed off on me or what, but I found my OS X computer's BOINC totally hosed just about an hour ago and it reported a computational error on every single unit in the cache including my T minus 60 hours CPDN unit. That's the second time in a row a CPDN WU has failed just prior to the last trickle.
