Slot-loading drive motors start going during Sleep!
Hello. I've been having problems with this iMac's built-in slot-loading CD-ROM drive since.... hm. Well about almost a year now. The computer is about 5 years old. It's the Indigo 350MHz model.
At first it would randomly eject a CD even though it was in use.
Just 10 minutes ago, I woke up and heard some motor noise. It would go for about 5 seconds every now and then. At first, I thought someone was using a blender to make stuff. But it kept doing it and I started thinking "WOW... how are they not finished with the blender yet??"
Anyway, the noise was traced to the computer's CD-ROM drive and here I am. It seems to have stopped for now, though.
Apparently it only likes to do it when it's Sleeping. Since I've woken it up and logged in, it doesn't do it.
It still works, but as I said it randomly ejects.
Can I get it fixed or should I just get a new drive?
Thank you for your co-operation.

Getting it fixed would be getting a new internal drive.

Right....
Alright, let's say I get a new one. Is the Indigo iMac capable of using a SuperDrive well? Would I be able to use it as a DVD player? I mean, I know the drive plays DVDs, but would it play smoothly?
Or maybe I can just open it and disconnect the power wire, though I'm not too sure how to open the case.
Thank you for your co-operation.

I just checked OWC (www.macsales.com) and they are not showing any iMac G3 as SuperDrive upgradeable.
This must be because it wouldn't play that smoothly. As for external options, you're not in much luck, as it would require FireWire or USB 2.

Re: Slot-loading drive motors start going during Sleep!
Thanks for the link.
Hmm... Actually I remember seeing a SuperDrive option for the G3 iMac. It wasn't actually the "SuperDrive", but it does the same only at slower speeds. I forgot how much it is, and I deleted the link a while ago. I doubt I'd get it though. Maybe. I have the external CD burner that will do.
So my question now is... is it hard to open up the iMac's case? If I can't fix the problem somehow, then maybe I can at least disconnect it.
But the weird thing isn't that it tries to pull in a CD every 30 seconds... it's that it only does it during Sleep. Why would it do that? .... Maybe it's partially a software problem?
I left the computer on all day. It wasn't doing it when I came home from work, so it's deffinetly some crazy Sleep thing.

That is possible. It is hard to say really. I just know the first thing a repair shop would do is replace the logic board.
If you think it is a software thing, you can always do an Archive and Install of OS X, or a Clean Install if you are still using OS 9.
Neither of these things will erase anything, but just give you a "fresh start" if you will.
