Printed documentation (not to be confused with COA) can be obtained by PDF, either from the site, or underground by shareware. As a matter of fact some text books and manuals can be found in PDF for free. And if something goes wrong you go to a user forum, like this one.

Also, it is becoming more common that docs/manuals don't come with retail software in the first place. Macromedia is a prime example. They all come with digital versions, but if you wanted it a printed manual, it costs extra.

Are you kidding? They are not even close to the same applications. PS is not about filters. That is like saying a 1979 Datsun and a 2005 Viper are the same because they both have tires. Photoshop is a professional tool well worth every dime of the price. Elements is a nifty little tool that does a few common tasks that the general computer user may want.
err,
Sounds like you havent really taken a close look at Elements 3.
PSE3 is a pretty comprehensive sub-set of full PS functions and can do some things that Phtoshop cannot.
From the way it works and the contents of PSE's various folders I would be surprised if it did not share the same codebase as Photoshop, just tweaked and limited for the consumer. Since Photoshop has been very modular for years starting from scratch for Elements would make no sense at all.
I am not saying this to justify pirateing, but from your comments on PSE it sounds like you havent looked at the program since it was Photo Delux.

Nope, I am very familiar with current versions of both apps. PSE is a consumer level tool with limited functionality (but enough for most users) There are many things missing that more than justify the cost of PS for professional users. (ps deluxe was a minimal image manip tool that mostly shipped with scanners)
PSE does not do anything that PS cannot. What it does have some features that are simplified and stuck together in a way that gives the illusion that it is a new feature, but those same things can be done using the tools that are missing from PSE in PS.
PS is about high power, high control, fine grain tools and plenty of options. PSE is wizard driven and stripped down functionality (from the perspective of the professional.)
Of course they share they share much of the same code. That is pretty obvious. But as I said before their targets are different.

PSE can't do anything PS can? OK smarty-pants; tell me how you make a cross platform PDF based slideshow in PS.
PSE is only wizard led if that’s how you want to use it.
PSE does lack the CMYK and other prepress functions PS has and I don’t dispute that PSE is not a professional level tool but it is an extremely capable image editor that is perfectly suited for the most demanding home user.
I have been using PS since v 2.5 and have worked in printing for 20 years so I know a thing or 2 about PS.
Currently I have PS7 installed on my home computer; I have always used Photoshop as my editor of choice. But I have taken a good long look at PSE and were it not for PSE's lack of actions and batch processing I could easily replace Photoshop with it.
The tools are sometimes in different locations in PSE but they are there:
Levels, Brightness contrast, hue all those are there and presented in exactly the same way they are in PS. Curves is lacking and that is a shame but even allot of pros I know don’t even grok using curves right so that’s not missed in a consumer editor.
Layers, Adjustment layers, a full compliment of PS filters and 3rd party PS filter compatibility,
Masks, channels, paths and a few other advanced tools are missing but those would be beyond the grasp of your typical home user anyways. Just trying to explain what a mask is to a hobbyist is hard, much less showing them how to use it.
PSE offers 3 levels you can use it in:
1. Wizard Mode, for clueless n00bs.
2. Quick edit mode, for a slick, all in one window editing for a more informed user.
3. Regular mode, where one uses PSE's tools much in the same way one would in PS.
I do not dispute what you claim about PS, it’s my absolute favorite application. What I do dispute is your description of PSE. Clearly you never got past the "Gaahhh, Wizards!!" Initial impression.

Well in the first place, I wouldn't. That is kind of a silly thing.
I was talking straight image editing tools. Slide shows do not fall in that category. If you are talking about those types of things then PSE falls further behind.
Pariah wrote:

That is the second time you have made false assumptions. I know the app intimately, as I have every version of it since it's inception. The same goes for Photoshop. As I understand the differences and similarities between the two. As well as the feature sets.
I am not sayin that PSE sucks or anything. But is an inferior image editor to PS. No two ways about it. And many of missing things are huge. Channels for one. Curves I actually do you otfen in color correction. I don't like ImageReady, but for some who use PS as their primary webdev image app that is a biggy. Paths and masks are pretty biggies as well.
Defend PSE all you want. It is a fine tool for the market it fits. The interface and usability is great fit for its market. I am not disagreeing with at all so there is no need to take an adversarial or defensive stance on it. But the original comment I respond to ignorantly stated that the price difference was BS because they have the same filters and sizing capabilities. Which is wrong. I have done print production for well over decade as well and used PS before it was PS. And PSE simply won't cut it as a professional image editing tool. But is very, very inaccessible for the average user.
PSE is a very different interface and level of usability. And a very smart move building on LE and deluxe. There were many other "consumer" tools coming from other companies to fill that gap. PSE build on the Adobe reputation/name, yet is accessible. Lets face it, Adobe has become synonymous with image editing. PSE was natural and smart move.
But PSE is not a professional tool. The price of PS is very justified. There is no other tool (PSE or otherwise) that has image editing/manipulation tools that even come close. (image creation... that is a different discussion).
In short, PSE is great at what it does, and worth the price. PS is great at what it does, and worth the price.

Re: Please do not pirate software...
Pirating software is not necessarily a bad thing. So some people steal from Adobe. And is it not robbery to charge $600 for a photo editor? The computer industry is a monopoly. They have us by the balls, and they can charge whatever they want for their software, so if enough people were to start pirating software, the companies would be forced to lower their prices to a reasonable level so that normal people can buy their products without worrying about if they will be able to make their next car payment or not.
