Do you know that you can FLY using the machine gun?
Bring it to level 3, jump and when in the air shoot aiming to the floor.
Is powerful enough to make you fly, and fly, and fly...

Did you know that if you don't trade in your pistol, you get a massive "fat" Gun later on in the game?

Hmm. You're not referring to the Nemesis Gun, are you? I got that for returning the miniature guy to his wife. I'll try not trading in the Pole Star for the machine gun, but I'll really miss using it (the machine gun) for flying around. sad

It's more of a super fireball than a gun. There's a CRAP-tacular weapon in the game also. Wait until you find that one.

I think you get the massive gun from the mushroom in the graveyard after you have the hover pack.

I have yet to go through the game a third time, but when I do I'll be using a FAQ so I can get some cool new stuff. This game is amazing.

I got the ultimate pistol on my second time through. Kind of hard to use, but sweet nonetheless.

Anyway, dudes, the fat gun is what you get if you go back to the hermit gunsmith (where you get the polar star) after finishing the "waterway" he'll take it off you and make it better.

I printed out the walkthrough, and I tell my 10-yr-old daughter what to do while she plays. We are having so much fun with this game!! It's hilarious, I'm yelling things at her like "Go that way! No the other way! Look for egg number 6! No, 6!!! AAAA!!" and we are craking up the whole time! I refuse to play until my weekend with her, so I don't get ahead of her. It's fun discovering together. Even her little sister (4) loves to just sit and watch and luagh with us. Good times! smile

The really hard ending is rediculous. Spike traps, spike traps, falling blocks, ugh�

I can't beat the secret ending level without cheating. But the changes in the hard path (save Curly, save Prof. Booster) are good. You also learn the player's real name. wink

Huh? what? I'm ... up there, you know, where the Boss is that girl. She's hard to beat! Well, I think it will be just a matter of trying again and again, like the previous bosses.

There are three endings, the one you posted above, the one with the doctor fight (the one you're on) and the Ballos fight, which is the really hard ending. It's hard to believe some people beat the game with only 3 hp.

Oh, and the cheating I speak of is the profile.dat hacking. Open the preferences plist file (com.nakiwo.Doukutsu.plist), and find the profile string inside the <>. Copy it into a hex editor, and modify the locations specified in here: http://www.gameflaws.com/cavestory/save_hacking.txt

Make sure to make a backup copy though.

I'm that desperate in one area. Now, as to getting a hex editor, where can I get one??

Well, if you copy out the data string from the plist file (use property list editor to get to it) into a text editor, it should look similar to this:
<446f3034 31323230 00000039 00000008 000302e4 0001968e 00000002 270f0002 27060000... etc. (it'll continue for awhile)

Change number group 8 to 270f0002 and group 9 to 27060000 in yours, then put it back into the plist and save it. That'll give you enough HP. wink
