And I weep, for the inferior Haloing I have on not-Mac... my upgrade should only push my 1600x1200 timedemo, all max with the PS2.0 shaders the Mac version lacks, into the 60s.

Woe is me.

I'll have to mail some such single-player screens to Icks, preferably .png-ed down, in time to throw on the server for Xmas and spread the cheer.

Later, when I can switch to an X1000 series card, the same with FSAA. Oh woe.

Re: Website Development Thread

Zander, I weep too, knowing that Apple computers have difficulties too.  Most of the time, they're stable as hell, but there are the infamous lemons that get shipped out; they just never EVER seem to work.  Then there's the hassle with the old IBM Deathstar drives that died more than they ran.  There's the first all-in-one iMac that would die from over-heating.  PowerBooks that you could fry an egg on.  Oh, let's not forget how frequently people typically have to reset their permissions, all the kernel panics, etc.

Put simply, both sides can run very well if properly maintained.  Both sides can also be pieces of crap if even the slightest thing goes wrong.

And like Bat said, nyah nyah, I can play Halo in more teh pretty than you!  wink

No, He who laughs last didn't get the joke, and should have rocks and sticks thrown at him.

So after years of x86 bashing suddenly Intel is teh shizz, you're going to get a Mac X1800XT (or wait for R580), and you'll hack your new IntelMac to put XP on it (more trouble than Icks just went thru) just to run Halo PC?

Intel hasn't caught up to AMD on gaming performance yet. I don't think my humble little homebuilt has any worries from you for some time... like near death.

Hack my Mac to put on windows? *chokes and dies*

No no no. Hack my custom built AMD Dual Core power house and put on OS X!

Re: Website Development Thread

Then you're still not gaining much performance, and you're stuck with sometimes-inferior graphics quality and the same narrow game selection.

If you can even make that work. You do get lower price.

Re: Website Development Thread

Don't the intelmacs allow XP (Or whatever) to be installed anyway? You just can't install OSX86 on a PC.

Re: Website Development Thread

Actually, there's quite a surprising number of people on the web who've hacked the leaked OSX86 into working on their Intel PCs.  But yes, Jobs has said that they're not even concerned about people running XP on Apple hardware; that they know it will happen, and won't try to stop it from happening.

I think that was Phil Schiller, head of Marketing, not Jobs. Schiller doesn't always know what he's talking about smile

I think we might see anything in the next year from MacIntels blocked from running anything but OSX, to same able to install and run Windows & Linux (but not vice versa) as per the patent application, to Dells running OSX, to OSX-x86 for sale to the public in a war with MS (risky, but Steve's ego is not to be underestimated). Only time will tell.

Only in the latter case, tho, would Zander's dream actually be 100% kosher.

Yeah, the devkits per se are unprotected and have OSX builds with driver and other support for particular Intel hardware.
