How to eject a CD

I have a (Bondi Blue) iMac and a CD is stuck inside.

At first it appeared on the desktop, so I dragged it to the Trash. However, it did not eject although the drive tried by making all the right whirring noises. I tried the paperclip trick but that didn't work. From the "Open Firmware" I tried "Eject CD" but that didn't work either.

Is there any other way? Perhaps the eject mechanism is buggered and i need a new DVD drive in it.

P.S. Where on the web can I find a lit of possible commands to use under Open Firmware?

Next time you are starting up your iMac, hold the mouse button down.  That should do the trick.

If you're running OS X, have you tried hitting F12? That ejects CDs on my iMac 333.

I tried holding down the mouse button and pressing F12 - neither work.

I'd say the eject mechanism is stuffed. Methinks its time for a new drive...if you want, you can rip the old one to bits and try and get your CD out...

Re: How to eject a CD

I'd like to get a new drive, preferably a CD writer combined with a DVD drive. What sort will I need? Will one designed for a PC do?

I didn't think a 233 MHz G3 could handle DVDs.  Or did you upgrade the processor?

Any CD drive of the same form factor and connector will do.

Hi
It seems to me that you only have two choices.

MCE's iMac (Tray Load) 24x10x24x CD-RW

eBay: Original 24x CD-ROM Bondi Blue (Tray Load)

Good Luck!

Re: How to eject a CD

I'm supporting a BLUE and WHITE G3 running 10.2.6.   The CD which I just burned here in Tiger does not appear on the G3's desktop.  It won't eject either.  I tried the mouse trick.

I'll try F12 later today.

Other tips ?   Is there a button I can push inside the G3 ?

Open the little blue flap to expose the fugly beige CD drive, and you should see the little hole where you can insert the end of an unfolded paper clip to manually open it.

I'm surprised at you.

Yes, use the paper clip trick.  I had to call technical support to find this out once.

Re: How to eject a CD

(I know you've done some of these, but it's a stock list.  I apologize)

Hit the eject key and hold it

Press and hold F12

Open iTunes and see if iTunes' eject button will work

Highlight the CD and hit CMD-E

Restart the system and hold down the mouse button (the left button if you have a multibutton mouse).

Start up in Open Firmware and type "Eject CD"

If your system has a manual override (paper clips ho!), try it

If all these options do not work your drive will need to be cracked open so the CD can be removed.  Try not to play a Celine Dion CD again (j/k)

Re: How to eject a CD

Thanks all.

No paper clip hole that I could see.  But I'll go over there tomorrow.

Re: How to eject a CD

I just checked: open the blue door. Under the tray, from right to left you should see the eject button, the Compact Disc logo, and the little hole for the Mr Clippie. That's assuming you have the original CD Rom. I also checked an external APS/Lacie CD burner I have, and the little hole is in the upper left hand corner. So if it isn't the original, it may be elsewhere, but it should be somewhere.

Re: How to eject a CD

Dammit.  I didn't have  a chance to try any of these.  My friend got it out by fiddling the CD drive door, adjusting the drive somehow and rebooting.
